Assignment Guidelines
1. Attend an Arts/ Humanities related event (artistic, musical, literary or dramatic) that illuminates or incorporates elements of the cultures we?ve studied in this unit. The event may be virtual or in person.
Examples of events include art exhibits, poetry readings, theatrical productions, cultural lectures, or concerts. Be sure to choose a culturally rich event, and do your best to really focus your discussion (maybe choose one artist, one piece, or one moment in a play). Attending a blockbuster Hollywood movie, sports event, or mainstream concert won?t count, but you can stretch the definition of an ?Arts/Humanities related event? to get at less-often examined areas of cross-cultural influence. No matter what you choose, events must be approved by me (email or ask in-class).
2. Respond critically to the prompts below in a written assignment.
Each prompt includes additional details that may help you dig into the topic a little more deeply. Be sure that your paper is double-spaced and in MLA format, and include a Works Cited page. There is no required length for this assignment.
Briefly summarize the event
Include the name of the event, venue, and any other identifying artist/production information.
Summarize the event context (this should be very brief; I?ll take off points if you include too much summary.)
Discern what the work(s) tell us about culture and values?be sure to provide specific evidence from the work(s) to back up your points.
Analyze the work(s), looking at both textual and contextual elements (see analysis guides and discipline specific texts to better understand what this means for your event).
Evaluate and articulate the expression of the cultural values (regarding a culture we?ve studied) in the work.
Analyze your subjective experience/ the contemporary lens.
Describe the impact that the event had on you or others in the contemporary audience.
Examine any lasting significance or universal expression that may remain relevant today, and explain its relevance.
Explain how and why the contemporary audience might ?read? the work differently than an ancient culture would.
Checklist for the You Experience It Remix
I have decided upon a cultural event that illuminates and/or shows the influence of one of the cultures we?ve studied in this unit, and my event is approved.
I have written down important details, I have paid close attention at the event, and I have made a note of where further research/ more information is needed.
I have kept my focus narrow so that I may look closely at the expression and significance of the work(s) chosen, conducting outside research where applicable.
I have outlined and drafted a paper that fully addresses all of the assignment?s prompts.
I have critically examined cultural expression and cross-cultural influence.
I have proofread my paper to catch any distracting grammar, spelling, or punctuation errors before submission.
I have submitted my paper to the appropriate D2L dropbox (on time).
Grading
The You Experience It Remix is worth 10 points. The assignment will be graded on how well it meets the requirements, and it will be evaluated according to the scale below.
A range (9-10 points): The form and content of the remix are exemplary. The remix is carefully constructed, error-free, and it cites reputable sources. There is enough of a summary to provide context, and there is careful attention paid to the work(s) being examined as they are critically analyzed to provide an in-depth discussion of expression and significance. With the aid of specific examples and subjective insight, the remix?s conclusions about cultural and cross-cultural influence are thoughtful and well-supported.
B range (8-8.75 points): This remix?s assertions are clear and it meets the assignment requirements. The remix is satisfactorily constructed, relatively error-free, and it cites reputable sources. The event context/ summary is coherent, and there is some effort to discuss expression and significance via a critical analysis of the work(s) at the event. The remix makes use of specific examples, and it explores subjective experience to highlight some of the ways that the work demonstrates cultural and cross-cultural influence, but it lacks the complexity and insight of an A range remix.
C range or lower (0-7.75 points): This remix has some of the basic components required for the assignment, but there are areas that need work to reach the level of clarity and critical thinking of higher range remixes. For example, it may be poorly-constructed in that it contains errors, it is poorly organized, and /or it does not cite reputable sources. Additionally, the remix?s insights may not be well-supported with specific examples, it may not address all of the prompts, it may rely too heavily on summary, and/or it may not thoughtfully and critically explore the cultural and cross-cultural expression and significance of the works being analyzed (specific areas that need improvement will be underlined if a remix falls into this grade range).
****We have studied Ancient Rome, Ancient India & Hinduism, and Ancient China (you can pick the event from either one of these cultures)
