Assignment  1 Topic Selection
There are several ways to upload or input your Assignment #1 Topic, due this coming Saturday:
1. Click on the Assignments tab > scroll to the assignment topic selection> Assignment #1 Topic Selection.  Upload a file with your topic or enter the topic in the comment box — just above the submit button.  AKA you don’t have to submit a file for this assignment.
2. Click on Content on the top banner, click on Week 1 on the left side, then scroll down to Assignment 1 Topic Selection, click it, then upload a file with your topic, or enter the information in the comment box — just above the submit button, as I note above.
Please choose from one of the following. Note that a maximum of five students may choose the same topic. Unless the professor reaches out to you directly, your chosen topic is approved.
Tobacco dependency threatens the health of many Americans and it poses a preventable burden to the health care system.
It is not unusual for patients in US hospitals to acquire preventable diseases, infections and conditions during their stay in the hospital.
A growing pool of patients is unable to read and write in the English language. Language is a barrier to effective care delivery as well as patient compliance.
Elderly and disabled patients with multiple medications are at risk of medication interactions and potential drug safety concerns.
Veterans may suffer from service-related injuries. Both physical and mental health are concerns for the Veteran’s Administration (VA).
Not all medical devices are constructed safely. Patients and providers must rely on their safety.
Health care providers are scarce in certain low-income and rural under-served areas in the US, including Native American territories.
Disadvantaged patients may seek care in emergency rooms because they have nowhere else to receive services.
Disadvantaged children often do not have health insurance and do not receive the preventive care (such as vaccines and well-baby check-ups) that can help avoid long-term health problems.

Assignment 3 Healthcare Regulation Impact
Select a state regulation from a state of your choice on one of the below topics. Prepare an annotated copy of the regulation, including the sections you reviewed to answer the questions in the following format:
Prepare a three (3) to four (4) page written response addressing all information in the following table. Text must be double spaced. Remember to write in narrative format except for titles. No more than 15% of direct quotes or paraphrasing are permitted in the document. Use citations and attach the notated regulation. In Week Five, you need to sign up for a topic in the Assignment Three Topic Selection folder in LEO. Unless the professor reaches out to you directly, your chosen topic is approved. Note a maximum of five (5) students may select the same topic. The topics are as follows:
Frontline workers must be immunized for influenza and potentially other contagious diseases. Where does this requirement come from and how does the state regulation ensure compliance?
Health professionals maintain responsibility for reporting elder and child abuse and neglect. How do state regulations help to meet this expectation?
Long-term care facilities must offer certain services according to state standards. What are they?
Some states have a certificate of need program to assess the need for new health service providers.  How does this work?
Sexually transmitted diseases are reportable under state regulation.  What diseases and what regulations ensure this reporting properly?
Parental notification is required for the treatment of minors.  Select a state and indicate how parental notification related to teen pregnancy in that state.
Patients must consent to participate in research studies, including granting permission to use their biological tissues for tissue banks or organ banks.  Does this involve state regulations if not what laws govern this?
Health insurance is administered on a state level.  What state regulations govern Health Information Exchange? (Note you must select a state with a Health Information Exchange in operation or close to operation.)
Alcohol and drug treatment varies widely across states.  Select a state and note the specific regulations about drug treatment facilities.
CLARIFICATION:  You need to select ONE specific state regulation/law from ONE state that addresses your chosen topic. Then highlight/select FIVE notable parts of the regulation. Then, in a paper format (NOT in the table), answer all the inquiries from the table. That includes analyzing all five parts of the regulation and its impact on the noted stakeholders in the table.

Assignment 4 Final Project – Roots of Organizational Policy
The Comprehensive Final Project (Assignment #4) has been designed for the student to identify federal and state policy roots in a specific health services organization. Each student will select a specific management area for a specific organization. The student will identify a health services setting where they have access to the policy manual (or a sample policy manual). The setting may include a single location or an organization with many types of services and many service delivery settings. Select one of the following health management areas where you will map out and describe four (4) organizational policies (four separate policies, or MAJOR parts of a comprehensive policy – for example, HR Policy covering all aspects of HR in the organization) linked to federal or state legislative mandates:
Facilities Planning and Maintenance
Occupational Health & Safety
Prevention Programs for Health Disparities
Payment Processing and Billing
Human Resources
Health Information Technology and EMR
Pharmacy Services
Laboratory Services
Supply Chain Medical Equipment/Technology
Patient/Customer and Community Relations
Strategic Planning and New Service Development
Advertising or Marketing
Internal Quality Control
Direct Patient Care
In Week Six, you need to submit a topic area and associated health services organization in the Assignment Four Topic Selection folder in LEO. Note that the same topic area/organization cannot be used by any two students. Unless the professor reaches out to you directly, your chosen topic is approved.
Prepare a PowerPoint presentation with no more than 18 content slides (students may utilize the Notes feature to provide additional context, if needed). A cover and reference slide must be provided (these do not count towards the maximum slides). Draw on what you have learned throughout the class to provide: a summary of each organizational policy, the federal/state legislative roots for each policy (by name and statute), any pending changes to the federal/state legislation, and your suggested performance metrics – how should the organizational monitor or gauge success of the policy.
Note:  the four policies you choose should address, either directly or indirectly, four federal or state legislations, or four aspects/provisions of one overall federal or state legislation
A good approach to the final project would be to allocate four slides to each of the four policies, each slide addressing one of the four bolded topics above for each policy. For example, title slide, introduction slide, then four slides on policy one (one slide for each of the bolded topics above), four slides on policy two…… etc.…. conclusion slide and then a resources slide.
A preliminary outline using word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word) must be uploaded/posted by Sunday of Week Seven in the dedicated discussion for both instructor and peer review.
