Answer the following questions based on the reading from Chapter 5 and the video clips. Try your best to summarize the information and write what you have learned in your own words. Any text that you directly copy needs to be in quotation marks. Copying from the textbook will not be enough to get a high grade (see the grading rubric below). For full credit, you should either explain the information in your own words, or if you copy text from the book, you should also provide your own interpretation. Answer in full sentences and make sure to DESCRIBE when asked to do so. For full credit you need to include observations from the video clips in addition to information from the textbook.

Please making sure to include the question number.

1.The taxonomic order Primates is divided into two suborders: the Strepsirhines and Haplorhines. Describe the ways (physical, behavioral, ecological) in which primates belonging to the suborder Haplorrhini (Haplorhine) are different from the Strepsirrhini (Strepsirhine) primates.

2.The Haplorhine suborder is divided into three groups (infraorders). What are these three groups of Haplorhines, which primates does each group include, and when did these groups split apart from each other (meaning, when did they last share a common ancestor)?

3.The tarsiers are a strange group of primates that resemble both strepsirhines and haplorhines. Despite having a mix of traits, they are ultimately classified as haplorhines because genetic evidence shows they share a more recent common ancestor with monkeys and apes than with strepsirhines. Describe the characteristics of the Tarsiers (Infraorder Tarsiiformes). Indicate which traits resemble strepsirhines, which are more similar to haplorhines, and which traits are unique to the tarsier. Be sure to include observations from the videos in your answer.

4.Which primates are part of the Platyrrhine group? Describe the characteristics of the Platyrrhines and give examples of specific types of Platyrrhine monkeys. How would you describe the body size of the Platyrrhines? Be sure to include observations from the videos in your answer.

5.Which primates are part of the Catarrhine group? Describe the characteristics of the Catarrhines.

6.What are the two superfamilies of Catarrhines? Which primates does each group include, and when did these groups split apart from each other (meaning, when did they last share a common ancestor)?
7.Describe the characteristics of the Cercopithecoidea (Old World Monkeys).

8.What are the two groups of Cercopithecoidea monkeys? Describe the characteristics of each group and give examples of specific types of monkeys in each group. Be sure to include observations from the videos in your answer.

9.What is ethnoprimatology? Based on the “Special Topics” section of the reading, describe the role that monkeys and other primates play in different cultures around the world.
You will be graded using the following rubric:
