After reviewing this week’s lesson, I immediately thought of this movie in particular. My Girl is a movie that portrays an eleven year old girl Vada Sultenfuss, her mother died when she was born and she was raised by her father and her grandmother who suffers from dementia. Vada is familiar with death and what it means, so much so that she begins to be fascinated by it. Not to mention she practically lives in a funeral home where her father works as a mortician. Since her father is not around as much, she adventures off on her own most of the time and learns how to be independent. During middle childhood, it is clear that she can dress herself and catch a few baseballs using her hands. At this stage, friendships become more important and have developed a selfless, emotional habit of thinking. Throughout the film, I know that Vada has a strange idea of death which she can only understand why she blames herself for her mother’s death. According to Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development, Vada is almost at the end of stage Industry vs. Inferiority, which is middle childhood ages 6-12 and the topic of this week’s lesson. Vada’s cognitive development has grown to be active, she is curious and thrives in learning about the human life and friendship. She is also mature for her age, but I believe that is because of her early introduction to death, being alone most of the day, and having a grandmother with dementia. However, Vada is also good at hiding her stress; she compiled all her feelings of loss and does not know how to deal with these strong emotions apart from all the good feelings she receives. This stage is crucial for a child during their life because they are able to find out their interests, find accomplishments, make valuable friendships at school, and compete with self-esteem.
