Please select one of the two prompts to address, and then respond to someone that chose the
opposite prompt that you addressed.
Prompt 1
Do you think that you will be able to conduct a good interview? What skills will you need to
strengthen your competence as an interviewer?
Prompt 2
What are the advantages and disadvantages of recording client information on the computer while
conducting the intake interview? Speculate about how interviewing changes if computers are used in
the process.
HERE IS MY INITIAL DISCUSSION
Prompt 2
There are various advantages of recording a candidate’s information in a computer when conducting an
interview. These merits include clarity this is because the interviewing committee can go through the
record over and over again to get precise information about the conversation. The data captured from
the interviewee can be used for future reference as all relevant answers obtained from the candidate,
and essential comments by the interviewer are captured in the record. However, this method of
recording the candidate information while conducting an interview has some disadvantages. It is
because an essential aspect of the body language, tone, speed of the speech, and pitch of the voice cannot
be captured in the records kept in a computer by the interviewer. This technique is expensive since it
depends on equipment to achieve the information gathered by the interviewer and in case the computer
fails a backup plan is needed which may be costly.
Interviewing changes a lot when computers are used. It is because with the use of a machine an
interviewer can video record an interviewee and capture the candidate’s answers and body language.
With proper backup systems, computers can be used to store interview results for an extended period.

Being a good interviewer requires specific skills and practice. You would think listening is easy however
it is different than hearing. Hearing implies just perceiving the sounds while listening means listening
with understanding whatever you are listening to. Hearing is an effortless and passive activity, while
listening is an active process. It takes intentional behaviors such as focus and showing interest in what is
being said. Both the body as well as mind is involved.
One of the first skills that needs developed and utilized is exhibiting behavior that indicates you are
paying attention and truly listening. The interviewer must show attentiveness and interest in their
posture as well as expressions. Some attentive behaviors include eye contact and desired body language.
Desired body language is leaning forward and having an open posture (arms not folded or sitting
sideways).
Active listening includes not only being attentive but asking questions, not interrupting, and clarifying
what the client has said. Repetitions of one or two words the client has said and providing simple short
comments to what the client has said demonstrates how well you understand what the client is saying
that the message they are attempting to convey.

Prompt 1
Conducting an interview with a client includes providing a comfortable setting, asking the appropriate
questions to the situation, practicing active listening, and finding patterns or connections. Providing a
comfortable setting involves temperature, lighting, seating, decorations and reducing distractions. This
also involves approaching the client with an inviting and warm demeanor. Asking the appropriate
questions is crucial. These could be questions regarding the client’s background history, medical
information, finances, and/or any circumstances that led the client to pursuing help. A skill to use and
improve upon when interviewing clients is in framing questions and the method one is using in asking
questions. Interview questions should be non-judgmental and present certain questions that allow for
open-ended answers from the client. Active listening and interpreting the information from a client are
two more skills worth improving as an interviewer. Active listening involves processing the information
from the client while also showing them that they are being heard by displaying eye contact and
appropriate body language. Through active listening an interviewer should be able to see any patterns in
the client’s underlying issues.
DISCUSSION
Personally, I could improve upon all of these skills mentioned. Through practice and continuous
education, I hope to be able to create the best environment and experience I can for any future clients.
