Neurohacking: rewiring your brain | Don Vaughn | TEDxUCLA – YouTube

I came away from the video having learned a great number of things, but I wanted to specifically talk about the developing technology used to induce neural rewiring. I know that Vaughn specifically stated that he wasn’t going to go into the morality of the things being discussed, but the availability of that procedure specifically caught my attention. With real-time neurofeedback, the thing inducing change is ourselves, which I would imagine sits better with people than sessions where a device does it for us. Our brain is a really touchy subject. There’s been a long history of things being offered to make our living ‘easier’ or ‘more comfortable’ that didn’t hit their mark. Lobotomies are one good example, and recently I’ve found myself referencing them more often. I blame this

entirely. Another example would be trepanation. You get a hole drilled or picked through your head and supposedly you’re free from the confines of your mental illness. Given that trepanation to alleviate disorders of the brain was prevalent only centuries ago, it doesn’t hold the same weight when you reference it as some other procedures, but it’s also important to acknowledge that it existed. So, yeah, maybe a lot of people are going to have an aversion to anything that involves warping a chunk of what makes them them. I also recognize that many people are comfortable with putting their trust into science, though. You can see that it pays off in the results. I personally get stressed out by even the idea of me taking pills to treat mental illness because I just stop and think, if I get help in this manner, artificially, what is it going to do to me? Who am I when I introduce this into my system? Honestly, I know it’s a sort of bad way to look at things, but an irrational fear is still a fear nonetheless
