The Brooks book (Mythical Man-Month) has been included in this course because it provides a unique perspective on IT project management in the form of personal essays by Mr. Brooks that are drawn upon his many decades of IT project management. The best way to read the Brooks material is in a reflective frame of mind – much like Brooks as he wrote his essays.

Brooks does an excellent job of removing the technical details of the subject-matter and putting things in a larger context that can be compared and contrasted with either the Weigers’ readings, other things you have read, or experienced in your own personal lives in similar settings. By reading Brooks in this manner, you will be able to make personal discoveries (hence the term “Aha!”) that are not obvious in the text and can only be seen through your eyes.

During the semester, you are expected to post two (2) “Aha!” papers on anything you have read in the assigned class readings (Brooks or Wiegers) that creates an “Aha!” experience in your mind. You can write about a part of an essay, a full essay, or several points cutting across several essays. You have a lot of latitude in these Aha! efforts. Note that at least one of them must come from Brooks.

The key thing is to put into words how and why you found this particular part of the class readings personally relevant and explain what you learned that was either surprising (completely new thought) or reinforcing of some preexisting idea or opinion that you had already. For each Aha! submission, you should reference the material being discussed, including the essay(s), chapter(s), page number(s), or URL(s) of the source material.
