Raising a Champion
As I am waiting in the holding area my heart feels as if it is beating out of my chest, I am
about to enter the show ring.
This is what I was experiencing while waiting to show my
Brahman heifer for the first time. Before experiencing the excitement of showing or the
satisfaction of winning a ribbon, there is a tremendous amount of work that goes into raising a
Brahman show heifer.
When I was young I always wanted to show animals at county fairs and major shows.
When I finally grew old enough my uncle let me show one of his Brahman heifers.
Many people
do not have a show heifer to start with so they have to purchase one from somebody. When
purchasing a Brahman heifer, you need to look at structure, muscle, balance, and size. The
Brahman needs to have nice thick bones, that is one of the main things a judge is going to look at
when you step into the ring.
Then you want to look at the head, make sure it has a nice feminine
head.
The nostrils must be black, and the lips dark. Brahman cattle are known for the big hump
above their shoulders, make sure the hump lies right on top of the shoulders and is not too far
forward or too far back.
Then examine the body, look at the ribs and make sure the heifer is
filled out.
Make sure it has a nice round butt, some heifers are more square or narrow and judges
do not like that. The tail needs to be moderately long and must have a black switch.
Finally, you
need to look for a heifer with an alert but docile disposition.
Once you purchase a heifer, you need to be sure you have the proper living facilities.

A barn with at least two walls will help shelter the heifer from cold northern winds and provide
shade during the hot summer days.
The individual stalls need to provide space for adequate,
clean bedding. Leading out of the barn there needs to be a run; a run is a fenced in area which
allows the heifer to get out and walk around. The entire area should be free of rocks, exposed
nails, or sharp edges. You do not want the heifer to have cuts or scratches during a show.
Water is a must have in the barn. It provides fresh clean water to the animal every day and it
also allows you to wash the heifer.
Fresh water is extremely important to the health of your
heifer.
The drinking water should be cleaned at least weekly and never allow algae to grow.
Washing the heifer lets it feel clean and comfortable and have an eye appealing look when
people see it. Washing is also beneficial in simulating hair growth.
Feed is also important for the heifer, it gives the heifer energy and keeps weight on her. You
can purchase commercial feed products from any local feed store or you can mix your own feed.
If you are just starting out, it would be best to use the commercial feed and seek advice from
your local feed suppliers or extension agent for what would be best for your animal. You should
feed your heifer twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. One of the most
important aspects of feeding is how much they eat. Using a set of scales to weigh out the amount
you are feeding is critical.
If the heifer is on feed and just lays around all day she will get too fat, so exercising the heifer
every day is good for them. Exercising your heifer simply consist of walking her every day for
just a short period of time. It will turn the fat into muscle making the heifer?s overall appearance
look significantly better.
Raising a Brahman show heifer is a rewarding experience that provides enthusiasm in the
show ring and teaches valuable life lessons.
These lessons include accepting responsibility of
