Needs
Week-8, you will play the role of the educational psychologist. For three of the four gifted students described below, you will perform an emotional needs assessment to present to the homeroom teacher, parents, administration, and school counselor for the gifted child.
Isaiah is an 8-year-old male, with intellectual giftedness. He is from a high-SES, Black family. Isaiah is small for his age. He is friendly, commonly finding humor in abstract concepts, but struggles with peer-bullying.
Vanessa is a 12-year-old female, with giftedness in visual and performing arts. She is very talkative, often overwhelming her parents and teachers, sometimes using words her friends dont understand. She learned English from watching Sesame Street after her parents moved to the United States from Peru.
Thomas is a 6-year-old male from a blue collar, White family. He shows specific giftedness in the sciences but has few opportunities to explore his interests in how engines work as he put it to his school counselor. In class, he avoids answering class questions due to an untreated stuttering issue.
Anna is gifted in the creative domain. Although she is 16 years old, she struggles with the English language, preferring to speak Arabic with her parents who immigrated from Tunisia. Although kind and quiet, her teachers often view her as obstinate and manipulative.
After choosing three of the students to observe and evaluate, use the following format to conduct your emotional needs assessment for each student:
Identify and describe a minimum of three affective needs that should be addressed for each student. Then, write a sentence to explain each need.
Explain the risk of not supporting that childs need. In two to three sentences, describe the possible negative repercussions of leaving each emotional need unmet.
Share ideas that you have to meet each emotional need. Then, write two to three paragraphs (eight sentences minimum) to explain who should deliver the support, and how the support should be provided for each emotional need.
Support your ideas with logic and at least one scholarly citation for each need.
Note that you may not have all of the information you need about the student to provide a thorough emotional needs assessment. Be imaginative and take liberties to fill in the blanks with regard to details about the student in order to provide a comprehensive emotional needs assessment. Be sure to identify diversity issues (e.g., minority stressors) that should be understood and supported in the needs assessment.
Length: 3 student needs assessments: 3 needs sentences for each, 2 risk sentences for each need, 8 sentences for each need (250-400 words per student).
References: Include a minimum of nine scholarly sources.
Your essay should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect graduate-level writing and APA standards.
