This multicultural exploration project will allow students to dig deeper and investigate the many facets of a cultural identity other than their own whom they may work with in the field of human services. The purpose of this project is to create a resource guide for helping professionals who may work with a marginalized population

  • Step 1: Students must first decide on a population of interest that is relevant to the course content and address 2 components of diversity/multiculturalism (gender, religion, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability/disability, age, geography,  socio-economic status)
  1. (e.g. Black Mothers, Teenage Pregnancy, LGBT Senior Citizens, first generation college students,, DREAMers, Muslim women, etc)
  • Step 2 : Students will develop a resource guide (which can be a powerpoint, brochure, video  or other multimedia tool which will address/include the following

    1. A historical overview of factors related to the identity of the selected population
    2. why you chose this population and/or why it is an important area of focus for Human Services professionals.
    3. Identify and discuss the developmental/identity theory and stages that relate to the selected population.
    4. Provide a description of the worldviews, values, and traditions that are characteristic of this populations’ societal/cultural heritage and experiences
    5. Identify how/if the articles within the Declaration of Human Rights were violated against this group of people within the United States.
    6. Explain how privilege and ethnocentricity has historically or currently contributed to the prejudice and discrimination inflicted upon your population. How has the media (books, movies, internet, etc.) contributed to or perpetuated the negative beliefs and misinformation about the population?
    7. Provide a brief overview of this population’s perceptions of counseling/psychotherapy as a help seeking option (What problems may occur while delivering mental health services to the chosen population? How might the problems be resolved?)
    8. Identify and discuss other interventions that would be appropriate for working with this population (Identify a specific theoretical approach that might be helpful)
    9. Discuss the level of awareness, knowledge, and skill that a helping professional would need to possess to effectively work with this population

Topics Must be submitted During Module 2 for instructor approval in Discussion Board and Final Project is due Module 6.
