This week you will begin creating the SPSS database that will be used to store and analyze your assessment data.? It is very important to set up the variables correctly before the data are entered.?

View the two videos, Setting up the Database 1 and Setting up the Database 2 for an example of how a database is created.

Your database should contain the following variables:

  1. Participant ID number
  2. Program ID
  3. Group (applicable only if you will be comparing two or more groups for a single program, such as a treatment group and a control group)
  4. Demographic variables (such as age, sex, and any other demographic variables that are important for your population).?
  5. Assessment instrument items for one entire instrument (pre and post).
  6. Assessment instrument totals for remaining assessment instruments (pre and post).

Please note that, if you were creating a database for an actual agency, each item of each assessment instrument would be a separate variable.? For the purposes of this course, you will need to select one assessment instrument for one of your programs and create a variable for every item on the measure in the database.? For the remaining assessment instruments for the two programs, you only need to enter a total score for each subscale. If there are no subscales, then just create a variable for the total score for the measure.

For this discussion, submit the beginning of your SPSS database including numbers 1 through 4 above as well as at least a few items from number 5 above.? Use this discussion to clarify any issues related to setting up the variables in the database.? Also attach the instruments that are being used for each program. If you are not able to obtain an actual instrument, provide a description of the instrument that explains the items, measurement scale, and scoring instructions.? Provide a full reference for each instrument used in each of the two programs.

The SPSS database containing all of the variables will be submitted for your Week 1 assignment.

Children?s Anxiety Treatment Center

Setting

Children’s Anxiety Treatment Center is a program at WBHA. CBT may be used to assist children and their families lessen the symptoms of anxiety, as well as provide parents tools to help create a more secure atmosphere in which their children can thrive. Participants

Parents must provide written agreement for their children from Sunny Days, Florida who have been admitted to the Children’s Anxiety Treatment Center to participate in the program assessment. It will be impossible for a kid to take part in the research if his or her parents refuse to grant their permission. Between the ages of 3 and 11, the youngsters will be participating.

Outcomes and Measures.

Using the Spence Child Anxiety Scale (SCAS), children ages seven and older may be assessed for anxiety symptoms. Children over the age of seven are assessed using the SCAS, which measures anxiety symptoms. Self-report measure with a 0 (never) to 3 (constantly) point scale with 44 items. In addition to English, the scale has been translated into 20 other languages including Turkish and Polish. For screening anxiety in young children aged 2.5 to 6.5 years, the Preschool Anxiety Scale (PAS) was created. Access to the SCAS and PAS is free online. Anxiety in children may be diagnosed and treated with this test, which can be used in clinical practice to track treatment progress (Fink, 2014). A standard questionnaire, according to Patten & Newhart (2017), the psychometrics of the scale have been rigorously evaluated in several research across different nations. Internal reliability, test-retest reliability, convergence/divergence validity, discriminant validity, and concept validity are all backed by substantial scientific evidence (Patten & Newhart, 2017).

Welcome Behavioral Health Agency (WBHA) created the Adult Substance Abuse Treatment Program. Adults between the ages of 18 and 64 are the target audience for this program, which attempts to reduce drug usage and improve functioning. Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is the therapeutic method used by this program. Treatment, according to WBHA, is the greatest method to aid those struggling with drug misuse and their families. They come up with a treatment plan that includes not just the patient but also their loved ones in order to provide a unique, holistic approach.

Participants

Adults from Sunny Days, Florida who have been accepted into the Adults Substance Abuse Treatment Program and whose family members have given their approval to gather data for program assessment will take part in this study. The data of a child will be omitted from analysis if the parent refuses to provide their permission. This age group includes those between the ages of 18 and 64.

Outcomes and measures

The ASAPT’s efficacy will be judged based on whether or not symptoms of substance abuse have decreased. The adult Addiction Severity Index will be used to gauge the severity of the symptoms. The Teen Addiction Severity Index has been scientifically validated and shown to be beneficial (A-ASI). This quick structured interview for substance abusers’ potential problems, called the Adult Addiction Severity Index (A-ASI), assesses a variety of factors such as the patient’s medical and social support, drug and alcohol usage, and their legal and mental status (Fink, 2014). The Addiction Severity Index has been adjusted to take into account the needs of adolescents. An important part of treatment planning and outcome assessment, as well as program evaluation, is the A-ASI. To present a comprehensive picture of the issues surrounding drug abuse, A-ASI does not limit its scope to a specific topic (Patten & Newhart, 2017). Welcome Behavioral Health Agency (WBHA) is a fictitious not-for-profit social services provider serving children, adolescents, and adults in Sunny Days, Florida. The agency prides itself on providing evidenced-based outpatient treatment for mental health and substance abuse issues to people of all ages in the community. WBHA is funded by a variety of sources, including grants from the state and several foundations.

The agency will need to submit applications to renew their funding within the next year. However, the funding sources now require that the renewal applications include evidence of the effectiveness of their programs. WBHA must provide data to demonstrate that their programs are effective in reducing mental health and substance abuse symptoms and increasing functionality in their clients.

The agency has hired the students in this course as Program Evaluation Consultants. Your job is to develop a system to collect data at appropriate time points to be able to determine outcomes of their programs. Each student will be responsible for evaluating two of the agency?s individual programs.
