Comparative Essay Assignment
Your assignment will be to compare and contrast two essays.
please remember that the focus for this assignment will be a critical analysis rather than a personal response, as in the first assignment.

Select the two essays that will form the basis of your critical comparative essay.
one essay for which will be provided ( 4 essays are provided however one can only be used)
one essay on the same topic from another source (e.g., newspaper, magazine, Internet, etc.)

Analyse each of these texts and formulate the areas of comparison you will address in your critical response based on the following considerations:
What is the main purpose of each essay? Analyze and explain how the controlling idea of each essay is conveyed and supported.
What types of stylistic techniques are used in each essay and how effective are they in relation to the main purpose of each essay?
Select some specific details of each essay and explain how they contribute to the overall effectiveness of the essays. How do these details compare and contrast with each other?
Which essay do you believe is more persuasive? Explain why you think so. Consider if personal opinion influences your perception of the author?s persuasiveness.
The two articles may have opposing views on a particular issue; explain how each author tries to persuade/inform the audience differently.

Leroy?s 1.2 COMPARATIVE ESSAY OUTLINE
INTRODUCTION
Write a thesis based on one main idea
(introduction =
who
is saying
what
and
why
and
how
)
Preface
(insert quotation, phrase, question that leads to your main idea)
?Bulk water deals have nothing to do with global need and global greed.?
In the texts
?Blue Gold?
by
Jim Hightower
and the text
?Nestle Pays $2.25 to Bottle and Sell a
Million Litres of Water?
by
Bill Tieleman
, both authors deal with the
main idea
(topic you are
investigating).
that governments need to be responsible to others on a local, national, and global level.
The topic is worth investigating because
?Canada holds 20 percent of the world?s fresh water
supply.?
Thesis (
what
you will prove based on main idea ? the
why
– your point of view of the
topic)
Specifically
, (state
your research focus/question
of your topic/main idea and
why
you want to
investigate the following question and/or problem – refer to the
why
or the
cause
of the main
idea/topic in the texts).
The two authors reiterate the importance of a government?s responsibility to others on an
environmental, economic, and global level through their audience, style, and tone.
As a result
, (state
your opinion on the answer to the question or solution of the problem
– refer
to the
result
of the cause of the main idea or the
effect
of the main idea/topic in the texts)
If environmental, economic, and global responsibility is not a governmental standard, Canada?s
freshwater supply, and thus our country?s well-being, will be sold to the highest bidder.
Subtopics
(state three clear subtopics that will demonstrate
how
you will prove your thesis)
a.
Audience
b.
Style
c.
Tone
The author(s) use of (
literary devices
? state
how
literary terms will prove/support your thesis;
each author may use different literary devices, or may use similar devices for different effects)
Hightower – for a general audience; style makes use of direct quotations and specific diction so
audience must have some form of higher education.
Tieleman – general diction, a lot of questions and shorter sentences

Sum up and transition to body of essay and first subtopic
Canada?s freshwater is a national resource, and as such, every person needs to be made aware
of the issue so they have the opportunity to have their voice heard.
Body Paragraph 1
State subtopic
(set up what you will discuss/how you will prove thesis in this paragraph)
Environmental/Audience – Canadians need to be proactive in communicating to the government.
We have an environmental responsibility to our country; if the government agrees to sell our
water as a resource, what are the environmental consequences?
Explain
(explain how your subtopic relates specifically to both texts)
Each author uses general diction in order to reach the largest population of Canadians so that
we can be responsible citizens in relation to governmental and evironmental issues.
Examples from text 1
Insert examples and quotations that prove subtopic and explanation of
subtopic; explain the examples briefly (explain meaning of examples and quotes and how they
refer to literary devices)
?
?Hell, you say, water?s everywhere.?
?
?What a crock.?
Each quotation is very direct, using language that is familiar and often used by the ?general?
population, thus making a connection with the audience. The audience will be more likely to
trust the author, as he ?speaks their language.?
Examples from text 2
Insert examples and quotations that prove subtopic and explanation of
subtopic; explain the examples briefly (explain meaning of examples and quotations and how
they refer to literary devices)
?
?The price is so low I have to repeat it.?
?
?The total estimated price of all the water Nestle will bottle in BC over an entire year is — wait for it
— %562 a year!?
The use of
?wait for it?, a line from a very popular show
How I Met Your Mother
, shows the audience that
the author is well-versed in ?popular culture? and makes him trustworthy – if he knows this show, then I
can relate to him and will listen to what he has to say.
Analysis
(connections and similarities in both works; lesson/goal of examples and subtopic; link to
thesis)
The use of words and phrases that Canadians use themselves on a daily basis, and that are a
part of our own vernacular (i.e.: Wait for it!) puts the issue on a level the majority can
understand and relate to, thus increasing the likelihood of our buy-in and a response to become
involved in some way.
