Kate Chopin (1894) wrote a short story, ?The Story of An Hour.? Louise Mallard,
protagonist, feels free and release rather than feeling isolated and glum. When she learns about
her husband death. Meanwhile, a shocking experience occur when Louise?s husband, Bentley
Mallard is still alive. The story was set around the nineteenth century meaning it reflects how
women wants to feel free again because in those time most of woman wouldn?t marry someone
for love but for husband offer. The main character illustrates the theme in showing feelings and
emotions in a divorce that leads to freedom.
Throughout the story the author, Kate Chopin, reveals emotions, feelings and thoughts
about Louise the view of the narrator as a third view perspective in the story. However, the
author does not use first person perspective. Likewise, the narrator knows how the characters is
by physically observation. Author use action to describe the author and by using words. For
example, on paragraph 17 it explains how Louise Mallard well feel on spring days and summer
day without her husband, Bentley Mallard. Louise Mallard feels strongly free with a positive
tone after she found out about her husband death. The author uses adjectives to describe how the
character feeing making her seem as an independent person. Louise just wanted to be
independent.
When Louise Mallard found out of her husband death, the got the feeling of being free
mentally and physically. She repeats the words, free, free, free (paragraph 10) and in (paragraph
14) she whispers to herself, ?Free Body and soul free!? to herself. As paragraph 18 said, she had
a joy of happiness in her eyes and she ignore her sadness and starts to feel as a ?goodness of
victory.? Louise Mallard ignore the fact that her husband is dead and she already feels a free
woman without regrets about it. She also is taking the chance of caring about herself and not

worry about the other person. For the reason, when someone is marry the two person have to

As Louise Mallard got out of her room to go to the living room to meet up with her sister
Josephine and also her husband friend, Richard. She saw someone opening the door according to
paragraph 19. Louise Mallard never expected to be her husband, she always though that he was
dead. This occasion was different after seeing her husband alive. Was it because of her happiness
of seeing him again? Or was it because her opportunity of freedom and liberty is gone for her?
Louise Mallard was against the world thinking that she already chooses her life as one person
and living free and her husband coming back was a very hard moment for Louise Mallard to
handle. Louise is not interesting in taking care of her husband. The vision is to illustrate that
Louise wants to feel free and without obligations.
In conclusion, Louise Mallard went through a lot of events in one hour to understand how
she really felt when her husband was gone.
All her wishes of being were gone when her
husband, Bentley Mallard show up alive. She knew that her freedom was just taken away in the
air. The big question is if Louise Mallard really love her husband?
When her husband died she
