Tea starts in China, obviously, but then really is an Indian story in terms of production. In terms of consumption, China is always the biggest consumer, but the story of Britain and the East India Company plays a big role. This article examines the historical origins of coffee and tea. This article is helpful for my final paper because it gives a very direct timeline of the globalization of tea itself, seeing how tea matches the broader timeline of world history. It covers the growth of tea from China to the now worldwide commodity that many people use in their everyday life. It has lots of important statements, but it directly points out the similarities and differences tea may have between distinct cultures which is valuable to my final paper for explaining how the value of tea in diverse cultures has changed due to the modernization and globalization of the modern world.

The purpose of this study is to examine the place of tea in Chinese’s and world history. It focuses on how tea has played a prominent role in Chinese history and in Chinas relations with foreign cultures. It discusses remarkably interesting points such as how tea was important in the opening of China to the modern world through the first opium war, it discusses the connections between China, tea and the cultural exchange, and finally how the origin of tea began. Its conclusion states that tea will continue to have a prominent place with an emerging culture nationalism and that over time it may develop new use for practices in daily life, more suited for modern living.

This article is extremely useful for my final paper as it will be used to place my commodity in the context of this course and explain its role in the modernization and globalization of the modern world.
