In todays world, athletes often become involved in political and social movements.  This has been true in the past too.  In the 1930s, the African American boxer Joe Louis and the German Max Schmeling became involved in a rivalry that got wrapped up in issues of race and the rivalry between Germany and the United States on the eve of World War II.

For this assignment, watch the PBS documentary film The Fight and in your paper respond to the following questions:

What three things impressed or surprised you the most about the film?
Both Louis and Schmeling had to manage their public image because of social and political considerations for Louis, racism in American society; and for Schmeling, the racist ideology of the German dictator, Adolf Hitler. What do you think about the way each fighter managed their public image?
Some people argue that athletes can and should use their fame to speak out about social and political issues.  Others think that they should avoid the issues and just shut up and play. What do you think?
