Module Three: Prompt One (micro-reading)

This is a class-wide Discussion Board Post activity. It consists of 3 steps, so please take note of everything. Complete this activity after you have read all of the assigned tales from Days Four and Five of the

Decameron

.

Step One:

Select two tales: one tale among the ones you read for Day Four (IV.1, IV.2, IV.5, or IV.9), and another tale from Day Five (V.1, V.4, V.8 or V.9). Now respond to the following questions in complete sentences. Directly cite the page number of the story for each item (i.e., “p.150”):

1. Who falls in love first: the man or the woman? What inspires their love?

2. Is the love reciprocated immediately, eventually with time, or never? Why?

3. Is there a difference in social status between the two lovers?

4. Does anyone interfere with their budding relationship?

5. Is there any cruelty or violence present in the story?

Step Two:

Now respond to the following questions in complete sentences:

1. What does this tale tell you about the relationship between social status (i.e., merchant class, or nobility) and their experience of Love?

2. What does this tale tell you about the depiction of women?

3. Could you imagine a version of this relationship taking place in contemporary times?

Step Three:

Now synthesize your responses to Steps One and Two into two paragraphs. Be sure to include direct textual citations. Your final post should be at least 100 words in length, and may be much longer than that.
