For this first milestone, you will identify an aging-policy issue to explore for your final project. These issues are as diverse as the older adult population and can be tailored to your personal interests. Older Americans are increasingly diverse, differing in their racial and ethnic backgrounds, religion, income, education, and sexual orientation, among other facets. These demographics undeniably impact the development of aging policies, just as different older adults are impacted differently by policies.

Overview: For this milestone, due in Module One, you will identify an aging-policy issue to explore for your final project. These issues are as diverse as the older
adult population and can be tailored to your personal interests. Older Americans are increasingly diverse, differing in their racial and ethnic backgrounds,
religion, income, education, and sexual orientation, among other facets. These demographics undeniably impact the development of aging policies, just as
different older adults are impacted differently by policies.
Prompt: First, select an aging-policy issue impacting your state or a state with which you are familiar. This policy should have clear implications for community
health and might include the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, Medicaid, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, or various state or local policies. Note that
you cannot select the Older Americans Act, as this policy will be used as an example throughout the course. Address the following:
Aging-Policy Issue: Describe the selected aging-policy issue that impacts your state or a state with which you are familiar. Why did you select this specific
policy issue?
Impact: How does the aging-policy issue impact where you are living or your community? (Or a community or area with which you are familiar?)
Gaps and Limitations: Explain the issue(s) with the policy, noting any of its gaps or shortcomings. For example, why is the policy an issue in the specified
state, and what are its limitations?
Address the Issue: As a policy maker or advocate on behalf of the older population, how will you address this issue? At this point, you will provide a
high-level idea of how to address the policy issue, and further narrow and finalize your recommendation as you progress in the course.
Your milestone submission should be 1–2 pages, double-spaced, and should provide a cursory overview to the policy and broad issues impacting the older adult
population as related to the policy.
Instructor feedback on this milestone should be incorporated into your next milestones and into the final project.
Guidelines for Submission: Milestone One should be 1 to 2 pages, double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and the latest
edition of the APA manual for formatting and citations.
