Film Paper 11: Light Girls Jiangnan Zhou
The documentary follows the experiences of light-skinned
people known as “light girls”. Although today’s 21st century is
a new era, there are still questions about color and values in
the memory of people of color. Lighter-skinned women are
recognized because they are closer to white people than darker
women, and because they reproduce in large Numbers, they are
often treated unfairly. In the past, people used the color of
brown paper bags as a standard to distinguish between people
with light skin and people with dark skin. Over time, the
darkest black groups were placed at the bottom of the social
scale, and many were forced to separate from their black family
members by the rules of this division, because they have
different skin colors.
During slavery, in the multiracial Nation of the United
States, there was a distinction between blacks and mulatto.
Mulatto were considered free men, but they could not exercise
the rights of whites. So after that, society tried to create a
three-tier race, because those who were mixed couldn’t be seen
as white, and they didn’t want to be seen as black. Because
these mulatto are neither black nor white, they end up
“homeless.” Because these mulatto are neither black nor white,
they end up “homeless.” Light skin has become both a curse and a
blessing, because they can fit into any group, but at the same

time they don’t belong to any group. Personal reaction: Light-
skinned people were indeed an awkward presence in the racially
conscious past. It’s an ambivalent memory for many people who
belong to this group. The question of race is an age-old puzzle.
