ASSIGNMENT: JOURNAL ENTRY 2
During my psychiatric practicum experience, I was able to achieve 90%of my
goals. One of the goals I had was to provide psychoeducation to individuals in a community
center setting. I provided information to the patients about the treatment and features of the
disease. Another goal was to interpret the results for screening instruments accurately. I provided
treatment accurately, reducing the expenses of medicine. I was also able to identify diseases and
infections, which made me more reliable.
The most challenging patient I encountered was a client with attention-
deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The communication was poor; getting the client to understand their
diagnosis was puzzling (Bartels-Velthuis et al., 2018). Another challenging patient claimed that
his religious beliefs were against any form of medication. The patient had complex PSTD, and he
refused to take any neurotransmitters serotonin. Untreated PTSD could lead to chronic illnesses
such as hypertension, and therefore refusing to take any form of medication was harmful to the
client. Educating and convincing the client to choose his health and take medication was the
most challenging part. Another difficult patient was a young adult who was homeless and had
previous suicidal ideation. The young adult refused to cooperate with other health professionals
but instead requested them to take her life. Restricting access to any lethal means and restraining
her to the psychiatric ward was challenging.
I have learned how to maintain professional boundaries and therapeutic relationships with
the clients and the staff. I have learned to use prevention techniques for patients who have minor
symptoms of psychotic disorders. Amazingly, I have used the recent technology and documented
patient records. This has helped in the easy retrieving of documents by the physicians.
The available resources included drop-in workshops. These workshops helped one to
learn the ways of controlling and managing stress, emotions, and thoughts. This helped me a lot

in dealing with patients with stress disorders. Another source was wellness coaching, where we
were guided on improving our strengths (Holley et al.,2020). This also helped me in developing
meaningful goals and working to accomplish them. The mental health strategies series was a
forum with videos that showed us how to deal with mental health disorders. This forum provided
knowledge and skills to treat mental health disorders.
I used symptom management as an evidence-based practice for my patients. by
interacting with my patients, I learned their symptoms better. I had to look at the consistent
results of the previous interventions to compare the signs and know what kind of therapy would
benefit them. I also had to look at the sex, race, and background of my patients in order not to
interfere with their experiences/
I would have provided a patient-centered environment. This would have improved the
privacy and the confidentiality of the patients. It would also have provided the patient with the
emotional support they deserved and their respect (Thomas et al., 2013). I would also have
advocated for patients' control over their decision-making. I would negotiate the dates and times
when the patient was willing to come for treatment. I would also provide a variety of activities in
the health care services. This would have included health promotion, disease prevention, and
health protection to my patients.
I have managed the patient flow and volume by using the technology systems to view the
data and variables of the patients. This has reduced the time to treat each patient since technology
systems are faster (Thomas et al.,2013). The technology systems have also helped me manage
the flow of patients by documenting patients' diagnoses in an organized manner such that the
physician will not spend a lot of time looking for the diagnosis reports. I have also applied my

skills to use the screening instruments, which has helped me provide the results faster, making
the flow of patients move more quickly.
I might improve my skills and knowledge by using of network online. Social media
platforms could help me improve my creativity and help me keep in contact with clients. I might
improve my skills and knowledge by reading case studies. These case studies can help me to stay
updated on the trends of the clinical setup. I can also find some organization that would help me
when I need consultation. I would communicate this to my preceptor by asking questions about
whether the ideas I have are essential. I would also share with my preceptors by creating time to
meet them and submit my issues.
The formal feedback that I got from the preceptors was that he would like me to get
myself more familiar with DSM-5 diagnoses, continue to work on assessment and diagnostic
skills and learn how to write measurable treatment plans. I understand that it will take some time
for me to feel competent, but I am grateful for the opportunity to work with the preceptor I had
for this course.
