OPTIONS: Choose one of the following topics
Option 1: Purpose: Identifying and Analyzing Symbols and Theme
Analyze the use of symbolism in one of the stories we read and tie the use of symbolism to the theme of
the story, explaining how the symbols help create the unifying theme.
Option 2: Purpose: Identifying and Analyzing a Theme in Common (Comparison/Contrast)
Identify a theme that two or more of the stories we read have in common. Then, analyze how each
story develops the theme, (you could include use of characterization, plot, symbolism, conflict, setting,
etc.,) and what similarities and differences there are to each writer?s approach to developing the theme.
Option 3: Purpose: Identifying and Analyzing Conflict
Explore the conflict of character vs. self in one of the stories we read. Why does the character have
internal conflict? How does the internal conflict surface? What impact does the conflict have on the
character and others? How does the internal conflict relate to the theme of the short story?
The Essay?s Introduction:
Set the stage for your analysis topic, introducing the first and last name of the author and the title of the
story you will analyze, as well as features about the short story that are relevant to your focus. Lead
into a specifically stated thesis at the end of the introduction that asserts your topic andfocus.
Two things to remember: 1) When first naming the author, refer to the author by full name. Thereafter,
refer to author by his/her last name only. 2) Story titles go in quotation marks (?Title?) and the main
words of the title are capitalized, except for articles and short prepositions
