MEDIEVAL LITERATURE through the 1700s (up to p. 123 in Norton)

E-1 (Essay 1)

BE SURE TO READ THE REVIEW MODULE BEFORE YOU WRITE THIS ESSAY AND CERTAINLY BEFORE YOU SUBMIT THIS ESSAY TO ME ON THE ASSIGNMENTS LINK.

Essay Requirements:

Length: 700 word minimum

Format: as specified in review module

This is a FORMAL ACADEMIC essay and must adhere to the conventions of such essays (see review module: Tips and Reminders for academic essays)

Submit THROUGH THE ASSIGNMENTS LINK IN Blackboard by date and time due as listed on CALENDAR and schedule. If you have trouble submitting through assignments, just send as an attachment to my course e-mail.

Please note: I do NOT want you to use outside sources for this first paper, except if you find the Norton intros or notes useful. I am perfectly happy to read YOUR THOUGHTS on these works.

Be very careful to cite your sources, both primary and secondary. If you use information or ideas gathered from Norton intros or notes, you are using a secondary source and, so, must document such language. Use MLA format with in-text citations to cite sources and quotes. If you do not know how to document sources in MLA format (using in-text citation, not footnotes or endnotes), use the info in your text or go to the weblinks within the course to get help.

Every semester, people plagiarize without being aware that they are doing so, in addition to those who knowingly plagiarize. It’s very serious business and easy for me to spot.

Please be forewarned:  IF YOU USE A SOURCE WITHOUT DOCUMENTING IT, YOU WILL LEARN AN F ON THIS ASSIGNMENT, AND YOU MAY FAIL THE COURSE.

Essay Topics:

Please choose one of the following options to explore in your first essay.

Option 1
Choose one theme common to the writers from the Middle Ages and Renaissance (up to p. 123 in your Norton text) and show how that theme is conveyed in at least three of the works using specific references to text. Be sure to use quotes with in-text citations as laid out by MLA guide to support and expand your thesis. For example, you might show how three of the poems convey the importance of courage in the face of danger.

Option 2
Choose at least three of the female writers from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance (up to p. 123 in your Norton text) and explain the ways in which their works are still relevant to us today, whether as women, as artists, or simply as people. Be sure to incorporate relevant, interesting quotes with in-text citations as laid out by MLA guide.

Please remember to go to SAVE AS and save your file as requested in REVIEW MODULE with proper filename and in proper format, namely Rich Text or Microsoft Word format (doc or docx). I can’t read any other format.  Don’t just save your file with the default name such as English essay but instead rename file before you attach it to assignments.  You will lose points for lateness (three points per day) and you will lose points for incorrect filename(1 point). If it is clear to me that you have not read and understood the very basic information in the Review Module (Essay Format and Presentation and Tips and Reminders for Academic Writing), I will return your paper, and you will lose 3 points for lateness. Make sure you read and apply the information there,or that you ask if you don’t understand something.
