Before taking this class, I wasn’t aware that there is a distinction between the Korean waves. I always just refer to it as the Korean Wave. I started to get familiar with some idol groups and to watch Korean dramas since the outbreak of the pandemic. The development of digital technology and social media has changed people’s experiences with the Korean Wave. Especially during this pandemic, K-pop groups obviously couldn’t hold in-person concerts; however, companies held concerts through online platforms. From my own experience, I watched several online concerts through Beyond Live by SM Entertainment. Both the fans and the idols have never had experiences of online concerts before, but these concerts turned out better than expected. Even after the event, fans can watch the replay of the concert through their accounts. Also, social media has made it easier for idols and fans to communicate with each other. They can share pictures and videos, and even send voice messages to their fans on apps that are on a subscription basis. Unlike in the Hallyu 1.0 era, the improvement of technology in Hallyu 2.0 has made communication more convenient and easier for idols and fans.
