Topic I chose is Delhi Sultanate. I have not come up with a thesis on the topic: Here is the professors instructions:

Length of paper: 2000-2500 words, (8-10 pages), double-spaced, 12 pt. font, 1 inch margins all around.

* This is a research paper so you will have to use outside sources. You may not use the lecture notes. Class readings may be used but very sparingly and only in cases where they are indispensable. Basically, I want to see that you?ve made a serious attempt to collect outside materials.

* Your bibliography should have no less than 5 outside sources. These must be from reputable scholarly sources.

* The period covered by the paper must be between 600 to 1400. The area includes North Africa, Islamic sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and India. Other areas may be acceptable, but you should talk to me first.

* The paper should have four distinct sections: 1) Introduction in which you explain the subject and what you intend to do and present a question for analysis (about half page). It is essential that you are as specific as possible regarding your thesis so that you don?t end up with an essay that simply wanders without focusing on a central question. 2) Background survey of events important to your topic, i.e. the ?setting? for your topic (1 page). 3) Analysis in which you present the evidence and make the arguments. 3) Conclusion in which you summarize your analysis and answer the question raised in the introduction (half page).

* Paper should include footnotes (not endnotes) and a bibliography with proper citation. You may use any citation format but remember to be consistent. Grammar, structure and spelling will matter.

* I am very flexible regarding the topics. Whatever you chose, please remember that the most important part is the question you seek to investigate. In other words, try to avoid a merely descriptive approach.
