Research Problem/Purpose
This research aims to find out the common childhood symptoms of impairment, grief, and distress and the interventions for supporting the grieving families and the acceptance and the feasibility. The workshop format goal was to help children develop and identify coping mechanisms that facilitate a person’s significant depth adjustment. The focus was to normalize and support primary social, foster resilience, and memory activities. The children left by their parents live with the memories of their parents, which can affect many things in their lives, including health issues (Schmidt & Brown,2017).
The investigators have placed the study problem within the existing knowledge because they used the closed-ended online survey questions to collect the data from participants. This study will solve a problem related to nursing, such as the mental healthcare problem related to the grief and distress that the children develop after the loss of their parents. Identifying these common childhood symptoms of suffering, impairment, and pain can help rescue children from mental healthcare problems and psychological health issues. The purpose of this research is to understand the effect of the children by grief and how to counter the situation or the needed support from the impact of the loss of a parent or sibling.
Review of the Literature
The concepts explored include community creation to reduce the feelings of isolation, the yield of the continuing bond with the deceased, and designing group discussions to help the children to share their experiences. Some of the references used were not current because their publication is beyond five years and others were recent since their publication is less than five years. The contemporary references were used to refer to the updated data. In contrast, the old references were used to make the basis of the argument of concepts in this study. The evidence of reflexivity was not in the design because there is no consideration of the beliefs and the culture and judgments by the researcher.
Theoretical Framework
Theoretical concepts are defined and related to the Research, including placing the children into closed groups according to age and the deceased. The Research is not solely on nursing theory. Still, it draws on theory from other disciplines because from the study, and it is open that the content was balanced between the grief-related discussions and creative activities. The theoretical framework is stated in this research framework in that the freeform commentaries analysis was done based on the process of the thematic synthesis.
Variables/Hypotheses/Questions/Assumptions (Quantitative)
The independent variables include age and death, whereas the dependent variable provides grief, workshops, and depression. The operational definitions of the variables are not given, but they are measurable and concrete. For instance, suffering can be measured based on participation in events and play with other friends. The research question and the hypothesis of this research work are stated, and they include questions such as if you need help in the future, would you choose to participate in the workshops again? Did the workshops help you deal with your problems? Would you recommend the workshops to a friend? And did the workshops meet your expectations? This Research does not have assumptions. Assumptions such as the location of the incidence and time should be applied.
Conceptual Underpinnings, Research Questions (Qualitative)
Key concepts are defined conceptually, such as community creation among grieving children, which helps in reducing the isolation feelings and the bereavement destigmatization and the result of the continuing bond with the deceased through the commemorative activities that are grief-centered (Ridley et al.,2021). Designing the group discussions and the actions to encourage children to share the experience of their grief, developing coping and resilience skills, and normalize their feelings. The philosophical basis, conceptual framework, ideological orientation, and underlying tradition are made explicit, appropriate for the problem?
Methodology
This research study used a qualitative research design and a closed-ended online survey to collect data from parents and children who participated in the workshop. Four evening sessions were involved in the workshop within four months, with each workshop lasting for ninety minutes. The sessions were coordinated by two mental healthcare professionals.
The sample of the participants that accepted to partake in the study included 81 parents and 46 children. This represents 55% of the response rate of the two hundred and thirty emails that were sent. The setting of this study is a workshop consisting of 4 sessions open to children bereaved of a parent or sibling over four months in Toulouse, France. This study used inductive reasoning to bring a general conclusion from the observation and the online closed-ended and open-ended questions about the participants.
The investigator chose a non-probability sample because there are stipulated criteria for selecting the model in which the leaders of the sessions were healthcare professionals. The reliability and validity of the measurement tools are low since the information was obtained from a small sample. The methods for gathering the data were not appropriate because the children may not respond to the online closed-ended survey questions accurately, and a lot of information may not have been collected for the study.
The data was gathered through two methods, including closed-ended and open-ended questions. The researcher asked the right questions, such as age which was most affected by the grief? Made the proper observation over the effects of loss and was recorded appropriately and tabulated. There were no ethical issues such as approval of the study protocol by the institutional clinical Research and the University Hospital of Toulouse review board and proper procedures to safeguard the study participants’ rights in that there was no collection of personal information and obtaining of informed consent from the study participant’s. The study method was carried out according to the relevant regulations and guidelines in place.
Data Analysis
The data analysis tool used is datasets saturation was not achieved because the information was collected from one institution and a small population. The results of the study are presented through tables. The data management and the data analysis were not sufficiently described because how the data was managed and the tools used to manage the data are not described in this study. The process followed to analyze the data is not well outlined. One of the findings is that approximately three-quarters of the parents developed a feeling that was either almost entirely or mostly met. The use of analysis methods such as the quantitative methods like the description is more critical than tabulation.
Summary/Conclusions, Implications, and Recommendations
The themes of this study include reducing isolation, expressing normalizing grief, praise for the team, other improvements needed, and the need for extended follow-ups. They do not capture the meaning of the data adequately because the data was obtained from a small group and from the same locality. The analysis yielded a provocative, meaningful, and insightful picture of the research problem being investigated because it gives the data for specific groups of children and parents.
No methods were used to enhance data trustworthiness, such as the SPSS, although the description of the plans. There are clear explanations of limitations, audit trail, and thick report including constraints such as the short satisfaction survey, for instance, is a simple method. There are strengths and regulations of the study. The strengths include failure to have the consent applicability for publication of the study. The limitations of this study include the inability to differentiate respondents on the parameters of their relationship to the deceased. Although the study explains that the four sessions open up a forum for children to loosen up and speak, it does not explain how it works. Another limitation of this study is that the workshop hours are not compatible with school hours.
The quality and the depth of the data collected was restricted by the only optional open-ended question and the closed-ended questions. The four sessions program is too short for a community to develop long-term among children?the variation of the time-lapse between responding and workshop completion. The researcher cannot generalize to other populations in terms of findings because the information was obtained from a small sample of 46 children and 81 parents, and two health professionals.
This sample is not a representative sample of the population of the children in the university and more so the fact that this sample was derived from one university in France. Although it is critical to consider the whole family unit, the children’s and the parent’s needs, the study covered only a small group session, and a support group led by a volunteer was available for parents. Most of the children rated the workshops as helpful. Approximately half of the population said that they would have recommended the workshop to people.
