COMM 160
Reaction Paper #1 Assignment Sheet
Purpose of the assignment:
The purpose of this assignment is for you to think about gender and its relationship
to your everyday life. Specifically, I want you to think about gender norms. How
have gender norms affected the way you live your life and/or the choices you’ve
made? How are you personally involved in the production and maintenance of
gender norms? I ultimately want you to explore these questions in detail.
Requirements:
1. Your paper must have an introduction that highlights the paper’s purpose,
forecasts the content of the paper, and provides a strong and clear thesis statement.
The thesis will serve as the statement that the rest of your paper will expand upon
and support.
2. You must provide at least one tangible way that gender norms have influenced
your everyday life. Think about your gender identity and times that you’ve been
made more aware of it than usual. These moments are typically meaningful. How do
other people treat you as a result of your gender identity? How do you treat other
people based on yours or theirs? What choices do you make as a result of your
gender identity? What behaviors does society encourage you to engage in (or not to
engage in) based on your gender identity? You don’t have to discuss all of these
items, but go into detail when providing your explanations.
3. You must provide at least one tangible way that you have been involved in the
production and maintenance of gender norms. It is sometimes challenging and
difficult to identify times where we have done this. For example, have you called
someone out for not being “masculine” or “feminine” enough? Have you corrected a
child playing with items that are not generally associated with his or her gender
identity? Have you made stereotypical assumptions about others based on their
gender identity? We often have a vested interest in not dealing with the ways in
which we produce and maintain gender norms, so it can be difficult to identify.
Again, you don’t have to discuss all of these items, but be sure to go into
sufficient detail.
4. As you answer requirements #2 and #3, you should be making connections to
concepts covered in lecture or in class readings.
5. Your paper must include a conclusion that summarizes the content of your paper,
restates your thesis, and ends on a strong note.
6. Your paper must be between 2 and 3 pages. It must be typed, double-spaced, and
in 12-point Times New Roman, Arial, Cambria, or similarly legible font.
Evaluation information:
Points will be given according to how well each aspect of this assignment was
carried out. If the paper met an average fulfillment of the above requirements, it
would receive a 75% (mid-C range) grade in each relevant category. If requirements
were exceeded and fulfilled thoughtfully and thoroughly, the paper will earn more
than 75% depending upon the degree in which requirements were exceeded. If
requirements were not adequately met, the paper would earn less than a 75%
depending upon the degree in which the requirements were not met. You can earn
up to 25 points for this paper.
Suggestions for preparation:
Be open and thoughtful with how you describe your everyday experiences in
relation to gender identity. It is often difficult to identify and critique the
relationship between gender and power because people have a vested interest in
not seeing how they benefit from power and how this oppresses others. Have an
open mind when completing this assignment and try to go into great detail.
Make sure not to ignore connecting your everyday experiences to concepts covered
in the reading. While the concepts in the reading can be abstract, they do have a
tangible, practical connection to everyday life. Make it clear to me that you
understand these connections.
The way we produce gender norms at the microscopic, individual level affects
larger, sociocultural norms. Conversely, sociocultural norms affect the way we live
our everyday lives and the experiences we have. Demonstrate that you have a
strong grasp of this concept.
You do not need to provide a references list for this paper. When you make
connections to class readings, you only need to introduce them in the body of your
paper. For example, you might write something like, “as is reflected in the McIntosh
reading, I was much more aware of my lack of gender privilege than I was my access
to racial privilege.”
