DISCUSSION 2

:

Choosing a Topic for Research

– Chapter 19 regards starting your research. As you consider a topic for research, I want you to think about the

Rhetorical Situation

. On pages 447-448, the authors discuss how the Rhetorical Situation can help develop a topic for research as you begin to consider ideas such as

audience, purpose, stance, etc.

For this post, I want you to think about Ch. 19, and then write about 100 words as your response:

PROMPT:

Explore one aspect of the

Rhetorical Situation

(

audience, purpose, stance, etc.)

and discuss how this might help you find or narrow your topic for research. For example, you may already hold a “stance” on an issue, so how might that help you choose a topic to argue about? Or, you may want to appeal to a specific audience (for example women’s groups or the LGBT community), so you might consider what specific topic might interest them.

A rhetorical situation can help develop a topic for research by figuring out who your direct audience is going to be. That will help narrow down the options of what your purpose will be to get across to that specific audience. Once you are able to figure out the main purpose and who you will direct it towards that will also help you find where you stand within the topic, and help the genre come into play. The main goal is to narrow down the topic that you are choosing to do. You need to make sure what you are trying to get across to the reader is very clear and there is no other thinking of what one could be writing about.

The rhetorical situation helps me with my stance, because it helps me think about who my audience is will it be just females or men and why I want it to target this certain audience. It also helps with making my purpose strong because it has me thinking why do I stand on this side. It would then help with my entire research paper because it will help set the claims and the evidence I would be looking for. The rhetorical situation helps narrow things down to make things specific and clear for not only the writer but also so it can help the audience understand.
