PEERS POST:

Explain if you would choose one single theory or a combination of several different theories to represent your view of child development. Why?

After reading this week’s chapter and this week’s article, I have decided that I would choose several different theories (Psychosocial, Social Learning, and Cognitive-Developmental) to represent my view of child development instead of just one single theory. I feel this way because every child is unique (National Association for the Education of Young Children, 2020). No child is the same as the next – there may be similarities in their development, but no child (or anyone for that matter) is the same. I believe that biology (such as genetics) and environmental factors can impact development. For example, a child with an intellectual or physical disability will not develop the same as a child without a disability. Every child has the capability to develop, but they do develop at different rates (Hernández-Alava & Popli, 2017).

Discuss how your theoretical approach aligns with your stance on one of the three basic issues of child development (continuous or discontinuous, one course of development or many, influence of nature and nurture.)

Since I believe that child development consists of a combination of several different theories, I would say that the influence of nature and nurture would best align with it. Nature and nurture focus on how our genetic makeup and environment shape our development (Berk, 2022). As I mentioned earlier, I strongly believe that these two components dictate our development and even the rate of it.

Connect your chosen theories to developmentally appropriate practices in your learning environment.

The Psychosocial Development TheoryIf I incorporated this theory into my classroom, I would do so by utilizing make-believe play. I would have my students participate in imaginary exercises while observing and offering support. This would promote social skills, language skills, problem-solving skills, and self-regulation skills. Ultimately, this activity would allow my students to learn more about themselves and who they can become (Berk, 2022).

The Social Learning TheoryI would use this theory in a classroom by teaching my students how to write their ABCs. For example, on the whiteboard, I would first write the letter “A” and then encourage my students to follow. This activity would be utilizing modeling and it would foster their learning (Berk, 2022).

The Cognitive-Developmental TheoryFor this theory, I would utilize it by incorporating peer-learning in my classroom. This would promote my student’s social skills, communication skills, and language development skills.

Thank you for taking the time to read my discussion post!
