Course Title:
Course Description, Vision, and Rationale
Non-ICU critical care nursing training is provided basic skills to take care of ICU covid patient. The
Training is going to be at the Intensive Care Unit. It will last for two weeks with a six 12 jour shift. A
preceptor is going to be provided for the first week. Basic ICU Covid training will be provided for
stepdown RN. The program will provide basic training for Cardiopulmonary care. Ventilator training,
hemodynamic classes, and Medication’s administration. Properly placing the intubated patient to a
prone position shall be observed. Monitoring patient with different levels of sedation, paralytic, or
hemodynamic support medication. On the 2nd week of training, the RN will be provided a mentor for
the last three shifts. At the end of the program, the RN will enable to transition into the ICU Covid RN
role and provide the care safely. A buddy system with a more experienced ICU RN shall be provided
once the RN completed the training and practicing on her own as well to improve confidence and
enhance the skill set. The training should enable the facility to assist the medical and healthcare team in
providing increased number of the ICU team.
Course Learning Objectives
1. The RN will learn demonstrate critical care assessment such as lung sounds, fatal heart
rhythm identification, mentation deterioration.
2. Students will demonstrate understanding of mechanical ventilation settings, modes and
appropriateness
3.
Students will be able to identify patients’ hemodynamic status and be able to anticipate
treatments by the end of the course
4. The RN shall be able to express confidence in providing care to covid ICU patient as evidence by
having a dialogue with the ICU team of physicians, patient, and family.
5. The RN will learn the utilization of vasoactive drugs, sedation and monitor accordingly, ie, train of
four on paralytic medication . demonstrate appropriate time management
Program Offering
Program Description
The two weeks Covid ICU training will be a part of the annual ICU Covid competency. Competency
will include mechanical ventilation settings and mode. The appropriate medication administration and
monitoring such as vasoactive drugs, sedation, and paralytic. Assisting on endotracheal intubation and
appropriateness of proning.
Program Outcomes
1.
The RN safely monitor patients on cardiac drips, sedation and adjust according to parameters
set by the physician or the patient’s response.
2.
The RN correctly utilize the Train of Four to adjust medications.
3.
The RN would be able to identify critically abnormal blood gas and anticipate the next
intervention.
3
4.
The RN demonstrate the identify the tools needed for intubation
Oral airway
Laryngoscope
Oropharyngeal airway
Nasogastric tube
Bag mask Ventilation
5.
The RN is able assist with the endotracheal intubation.
6.
The RN understands the various mode of Ventilator setting
7.
The RN identifies the Ventilator setting alarms and able to act accordingly.
8.
The RN verbalizes the therapeutic importance of proning a covid patients.
9.
The RN will demonstrate enhance level of confidence as evidence by the ability to verbalize the
plan of care for ICU covid patient
