4-5 pages double-spaced, max 1300 words. Due at 5PM on Wednesday, Week 6.
In this paper, you will choose two works and compare, contrast, or discuss the relationship between the way each work engages with one of the themes we have discussed in class (imperialism, nationalism or national belonging, identity, race, multiethnicity or multiculturalism, the politics of language use, etc.) One of the
works must be a work we have watched or read in class, and the other can be from class or can be another relevant work you choose with the approval of the instructor. You may choose to use the same work you discussed in the midterm paper, as long as you analyze a different scene or passage than the one you analyzed in the previous paper.
As with the midterm, this paper should include 1) an introduction that provides context for the works you have chosen and presents a clear thesis statement about the relationship between the two works, 2) at least one close reading of a passage or formal scene analysis for each work you are discussing, although you can choose multiple passages or scenes if you feel that will more effectively communicate your argument, and 3) a discussion of the significance of those
formal aspects and how they demonstrate a significant similarity, difference, or other type of relationship between the meanings of the two works.
If you want to write a paper that diverges from the structure of argument outlined above, or if you prefer to submit your paper in a different format (video essay, podcast episode, etc), you must consult with the instructor by Wednesday of Week 5 at the latest.
