Every February marks the anniversary of Executive Order 9066. Given the current political climate in the United States, we can learn from the history of the Japanese-American Internment camps and hopefully seek justice and fair treatment for immigrant families today.

In Chapter 4, part 1 we discuss the art created by Japanese-American artists in the World War II internment camps. Many internees created arts and crafts as a way of coping with their confinement.

San Francisco-based author Delphine Hirasuna gathered many of these art objects created in the camps and created a book and a traveling exhibition entitled The Art of Gaman: Arts and Crafts from the Japanese Internment Camps, 1942-1946. Watch this video clip (Links to an external site.) as an introduction. You can also examine some more of the art objects from this exhibit by searching online using the name of the exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution.

What is the meaning of the word “gaman”? What are some of the diverse media (materials used) to create art in the camps? Find a few different art forms to mention and describe.
