Current Event Posts (CE) & Current Event Response
(CER) Guidelines
Current Events help students to make connections between events in the
real world and the effects these events have on human development. For
Modules 2-7, students will select a recent (1 month old or less) internet
news article from a reputable source reporting on a subject that
is relevant to any of the content within the particular module being studied.
Based on the article, students will write a brief discussion board post.
Students will be assigned to one of two groups (Group 1 and Group
2). Alternating modules, one group of students will post a Current Event to
the assigned discussion board and the other group will post a Response to a
Current Event in that discussion board. For the next module, the roles will be
reversed. In other words, for each module you will either be posting a
Current Event or posting a Response; you will not be required to do both
within the same module. If you post a Current Event or respond to a Current
Event for a Module that you were not assigned, you will not receive credit for
that post/response. Current Events are required for Modules 2-7; they are
not required for Module 1 or Module 8.
Important: When posting your Current Events and Responses, please type
them directly into the discussion board. I recommend typing them first into a
Word document so that you can proofread for errors before posting, but then
you will need to copy and paste from your document to the discussion board
so that your file does not have to be downloaded in order to be read.
Group assignments will be based on last names and can be found in
the section below.

Reputable Sources:
Reputable sources include those from legitimate online news outlets such as
the major broadcast news networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, etc.). They
also include online newspapers/magazines (The Washington Post, The
Atlantic, The Christian Science Monitor, Bloomberg News, etc.). International
news agencies are also good choices (BBC, Al-Jazeera, Reuters, etc.). This
list is not exhaustive; feel free to choose other sources as long as their
mission is to report news, not just gossip. Articles from journals (Journal
of Early Childhood Research, Journal of Child and Family Studies,
Journal of Marriage and Family, etc.) in which research findings are
being reported are not acceptable for this assignment.
Selecting Articles:
Article Publication Dates: The articles that you select must be dated
within 1 month of the due date of the Current Event. For example, if your
Current Event is due on June 26th, then your article must have been
published between May 26, 2021 and June 26, 2021. If a date is not stated
in the article, then you should choose a different article.
Content of Articles: The articles that you select must be relevant to the
specific age range of the current module being studied. For example, if you
are responsible for posting a Current Event for Module 3, then your article
must be relevant to individuals in early childhood. Likewise, if you are
responsible for posting a Current Event for Module 7, then your article must
be relevant to individuals in middle adulthood. Articles must also be relevant
to the topics discussed in the lectures or the textbook chapters for that
module.
Duplicate Articles: Students may not post articles that have already been
posted by other students. If you post an article that another student has
already posted within the same module, then there will be a penalty of
50%. Therefore, before posting your article, you should look to see if anyone
else has used the same article. To ensure that you don’t duplicate
articles within the same module, it is suggested that you post your Current
Event early. I realize that it is possible for two students who post their
current events around the same time to have chosen the same article and I
will take this into consideration, but please make an effort to avoid posting
duplicate articles.
Current Event Posts:
The following information must be included in your post. Please complete
the sections in the order listed below, label each section
appropriately (“Source“, “Summary”, “Connections to _ _ _ Domain”,
“Connection to Life/Career”, “Questions”), and keep each section
separate:
Source (3 pts): Provide the author of the article, date the article was
published (see section above), title of the article, name of the website
(different from the URL), and an active URL for the article. An active URL is
one that is hyperlinked so that I only have to click on it to verify the
article. Please use the format below when providing the source information:
