MODULE 3

Force Field Analysis

From your school’s State Report Card (or unique content or student group), you have identified an area of instructional need. What factors are driving, or supporting, student achievement/ mastery in this area? What factors are preventing student achievement/mastery in this area? What factors are within your control?

you will complete a force field analysis to determine the answers to these questions.

Step 1:

Write a well-developed introductory paragraph to remind the reader of your teaching situation or the one you are using for this assignment. At the end of the paragraph, state the desired change related to the identified area of instructional need (Module 2). Example: Students will demonstrate safe, civil, and orderly behavior as evidenced by decreased referrals to an administrator from 20 to 5 per module. Cite the data supporting the identified need.

Step 2:

Create the force field analysis chart in your Word or text document, and use the chart to complete Steps 3-4. Retain your work in the chart to demonstrate your thinking process.

(Barriers)

Step 3:

In the force field analysis chart, brainstorm factors that are driving and preventing this desired change. Take 5 to 10 minutes for each column, and brainstorm as many ideas as you can. It is helpful to focus on processes versus people.

Step 4:

After brainstorming, examine the list of barriers or restraining forces, and determine forces within your control. Eliminate those outside your control by making a line through them.

Step 5:

Next, prioritize the list of remaining ideas in light of the following variables:

  • Over what do you have the most control?
  • What can you do the most with for the least amount of time, energy, and money?

Step 6:

Provide in two or three well-developed paragraphs a rationale for your priority list.

  • Select the barrier you want to eliminate after considering the questions. Compose one well-developed paragraph to explain your final decision making.
  • Reflect on your work and conclude your paper in a well-developed paragraph. Use the questions to guide your response:

    • In what way is the force you have identified restraining achievement/mastery of your students?
    • What are your initial ideas about how this barrier can be overcome?
    • What predictions can you make about how these factors will affect student achievement moving forward?
