Bias and SDOH in Hollywood: Each student will find and watch a movie that emanates bias
and SDOH (some examples are listed for you). There are many more movies that exist that
portray bias. It will be your responsibility to review the ratings for family friendly content if that
is desired. There are some family friendly movies listed below. Each student will write a paper in
APA format that answers the following questions:
Paper content:
1. Briefly describe the plot of the movie (No more than 2 paragraphs).
2. Point out no less than 3 incidences of bias secondary to a SDOH portrayed in the movie.

How did these incidences of bias affect the character: physically, emotionally, spiritually,
mentally. Provide evidence from the movie using direct quotations. Please address all 4
aspects
Evidence based section: Does the character portrayal of bias/prejudice/SDOH align with
what the research states about it?
How does the writer/director/actors intentionally or unintentionally influence society in
regards to the bias/s and the responses to those biases.
In your opinion, does Hollywood help or hurt the effects of bias in society.
Paper mechanics:
1. APA requires a Title and page numbers. Refer to the APA resources posted in the
content section of the course. Please look at feedback on previous discussion posts
and reference the APA manual.
a. No abstract or table of contents are required
b. Include a clearly labeled introduction and conclusion
c. Use clear level headings to indicate which section of the paper you are in
(Refer to 7th APA manual). This is a requirement. )***Points will be deducted
if you do not use headings
d. Follow the rubric.
e. Reference page must follow APA format (refer to the APA resources and
7th edition manual)
f. Recommendation: Have someone proof read your paper for typos, APa
errors, and grammatical errors
2. A minimum of 2 peer reviewed articles is required in the Evidence based section.
The articles must be peer-reviewed and no more than 5 years old.
