Chapter 7 – Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) Theory 7 Questionnaire

Researchers have used many different questionnaires to study Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) Theory. All of them have been designed to measure the quality of the working relationship between leaders and followers. The LMX 7 is designed to measure three dimensions of leader-member relationships: respect, trust, and obligation. It assesses the degree to which leaders and followers have mutual respect for each other’s capabilities, feel a deepening sense of reciprocal trust, and have a strong sense of obligation to one another. Taken together, these dimensions are the ingredients of strong partnerships. This questionnaire contains items that ask you to describe your relationship with either your leader or one of your subordinates. For each of the items, indicate the degree to which you think the item is true for you by circling one of the responses that appear below the item. Upon completion of the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX 7) Questionnaire, please address the following points in your 1 page support document:

– Please indicate whether you have completed the LMX 7 questionnaire as a description of your relationship with your leader or one of your subordinates.

– According to your LMX 7 score, describe the overall quality of your relationship (e.g., low quality, medium quality, or high quality).

– Do you find that your score on the LMX 7 accurately reflects the types of roles, influences, exchanges, and interests that are experienced between you and your leader/subordinate? (Reference Textbook – Table 7.1 (pg. 143) – Phases of Leadership Making)

– Do you believe it would be beneficial to work to improve the quality of this specific relationship? Why or why not?

– Finally, what is your take-away from this exercise? How does this help your development, or understanding of when you are likely to be most effective as a leader?
