1.Having been in healthcare long enough to remember paper orders, I will say that one of the biggest advantages is that there are far fewer errors due to handwriting being illegible.   Many times, handwriting was hard to decipher on hand written orders.  I remember looking at hand written orders for echocardiograms where physician would state a diagnosis for the echo that was totally illegible.  Often, we’d have to call the doctor for clarification.

2.Computerized order entries are also easier to track. Some of our cardiology patients are on many, many medications.  If these medications were charted manually on paper, it would take a long time to figure out if any of these meds interacted negatively with one another.  In contrast, when they are put into EHR’s, many EHR’s have functions that alert you if you have entered a medication that conflicts with an existing medication.  This is a huge advantage in that it saves time and adds safety and protection from medication errors for the patient.

Two advantages of using a computerized order entry system are:

1. Portable records available at multiple sites. Paper records are physical documents available in only one location (unless copied physically to another location), whereas electronic records can be made available (with permissions) in multiple offices, across different providers, and to patients with greater ease and efficiency.

2. Aggregate reporting with greater ease. Digitized records, particularly records containing structured data like standardized codes or demographic information, are well-suited to computerized reporting functions. These types of reports can drive strategies that are supported by clear data.
