In my experience, getting assistance from an outside independent consultant was based on theory. It is helpful to consult experts in instructional design and psychology, especially cognitive psychology, and brain research (Ornstein 2017 p.198). The consultant assisted with curriculum theory of use of a curriculum, curriculum design and evaluation. The consultant was to assist with the implementation of a remediation course through an HMH (Read 180/System 44). Read 180/System 44 is a reading comprehension and phonics awareness tool. The consultant dissected the Georgia standard to match the intervention tool. The questions of which part of the curriculum would be used for the remediation of the different groups of students; How would the curriculum be designed to meet individual needs of the students with an RTI; and When and How the curriculum would be evaluated as the students show progress.

I think the organizations resources were well spent because the consultant did a series of virtual workshops and in person training sessions. The HMH consultant assisted with building and aligning the curriculum with Read 180/System 44 with the use of the middle grades English Language Arts curriculum. This was resourceful, because I learned tools to adequately design a curriculum to meet the needs of the students. The consult taught me how to use the curriculum based on where the students test and what curriculum is required based on the content and grade level. I also learned how to build the curriculum based on the data analysis, considering intervention is to meet the personalized needs of student groups. Tools to evaluate the success of the curriculum was also provided.
