This is your opportunity to be a budding scholar. There are no right or wrong answers to The Question. I
expect to receive as many different answers as there are students in the class,
and I hope that I do. I also
expect to find some themes among you.
Before you begin formulating your answer (even if you already have an idea of the direction
you would
like to go), it’s a good idea to visit the Annual Question section of Edge.org. From
2005 through 2018, Dr.
Jon Brockman, the curator Edge.org, asked an annual question of sufficient scope to engage scholars
and other leading minds in its answer. He then collated the responses and posted them on Edge.org. (He
also published them in book form if you’re

Reading these response, even a
few of them to a few questions, will give a good idea 1) how to think
about The Questions, 2) how to go about framing your response, 3) why no one answer could possibly
be correct, and 4) the structure and tone your response should take. It is to your benefit to spend as
much time as possible over the semester visiting these pages. Make it part of your scheduled homework
