II. INFORMATION FOR INSTRUCTORS

1.Pick A or B for your section(s)
A.Two Brief Essays: Have students complete a single personal responsibility prompt, and a single social responsibility prompt, from section IV. You can tell the students what prompts to answer, or they can pick.
B.One Essay: Have students do the merged personal/social responsibility prompt.
2.You may choose the minimum length of the essay (s). Have students submit the essays through Turnitin via your UHD Blackboard.
3.Grade the essays according to your own standards. UHD readers will assess the essays at a later date using university rubrics. Their process has nothing to do with your class grades, or your evaluation as an instructor.
4.UHD recommends the essays comprise 5% of the total semester grade.
5.All essays require brief prep time or readings. How you handle this is up to you. But please assign the essays in the second half of the semester.
6.In terms of delivery logistics, expect UHD to contact you directly regarding how to collect the essays electronically. If UHD does not contact you, please save the essays in a folder.

Option A. Hypothetical Situation (from Joseph Nye, Understanding International Conflicts (Longman, 2003) page 21.

Imagine walking into a village in another country. You find that a local military officer is about to shoot three people lined up against the wall. You ask, ?Why are you shooting these people? They look quite harmless.?

The officer says, ?Last night somebody in this village shot one of my men. I know that somebody in this village is guilty, so I am going to shoot these three to set an example.?

You say,?You can?t do that! You?re going to kill an innocent person. If only one shot was fired, then perhaps two of these people are innocent, perhaps all three. You just can?t do that.?
