For this assignment, you’ll need to find one sexual health artifact – that is, a human-made object relating in some way to men’s or women’s sexual health. Note that the objects could relate to reproduction (either facilitating or preventing it) or to sexual health more generally. Here are a few examples, but there are numerous others you could examine – the packaging of any sort of contraception (for women or men), any product related to pre-conception or pregnancy, a flyer or ad for such products, a pamphlet from a reproductive health clinic, sperm bank, or egg donation facility, or an ad for a product related to sexual performance or health. Upload a photo of the artifact with your post (using “embed image” option), and answer the following questions. Please note that images you find online are just fine!

  1. Describe your artifact. What is it? Who is it targeting? (Not only gender but also other categories like age, race, or class may be relevant to your item.) What language or images are used? (40 points)
  2. Analyze your artifact as a gendered product. Here are some questions that are likely to be relevant to your item: How does it reflect the social construction of gender? Sexuality as a gendered phenomenon? What are its messages about the role of women versus men in contraception, reproduction, or sexual relationships more generally? (40 points)
  3. Reply to at least one other participant’s post. Be sure your reply adds to the discussion in a substantive way. (For example, you’d want to say something more than just “I agree” or “I’ve seen that, too!”) (20 points)

*Please note that this discussion, like the others, requires you to analyze something using a sociological perspective. It does not ask for opinions, beliefs, or judgments. For example, statements about whether people should or should not engage in X or Y behavior have no place in the discussion, as answering normative questions like these isn’t our goal. If you have any questions about your artifact or analysis of it, please let me or your mentor know. We are happy to help!
