Each and every one of us struggles with writing at some time or another. Some of us have trouble writing a sympathy note. Others have trouble writing evaluation letters when we are in supervisory positions. Whatever our individual struggles are it is helpful to identify the specific struggles. We may not be able to turn the struggles into advantages but identifying them will let us know where we need to spend our energy.

. In module one I identified a large percentage of obese residents in Lorain County. In this discussion we will talk about social learning theory and how it pertains to teaching a group of parents or youth how to eat better at home, increase activity and reduce obesity rates.

  • Social learning theory has been around for many years. In this theory,

    the environment

plays a large part in learning, we model the behavior of the people around us, especially if we find these models similar to ourselves or if we want to emulate them (Social Learning Theory, 2022). Our mental status, or willingness, to learn affects the outcome of retaining the information and just because we are able to learn a new task does not mean we will continue to do it if the motivation to continue is not there. In Lorain County the obesity rates are high. Many factors could contribute to this epidemic such as busy, sedentary lives, and a large intake of fast, processed foods (Gaskin et al., 2019). Children are learning from their parents how to eat. Though there are many contributing factors to overweight and obesity, controlling one’s weight is a matter of balancing caloric intake with physical activity (Kaakinen et al., 2018). Education should then be aimed at these two areas.
  • A target group used to help reduce these obesity rates could be a group of parents or youth in local churches. Busy parents tend to do less cooking at home due to time constraints and being tired after work. When applying social learning theory to this group, a strategy to help them eat better at home would be a cooking demonstration or class. Teach them how to prepare quick and simple dishes with few ingredients for a low cost. Another strategy that I have used for educating a group was to give them a visual of the actual amounts of sugar in sodas and juices. I then provided a list of better alternatives. A third strategy provides a list of parks that give free access to walking trails to utilize as a family.
  • In conclusion, obesity is taking our nation by storm. The access to cheap and highly processed foods, full of fat, sugar and salt, is easier than the access to grocery stores and higher quality foods. Arming parents and children with better strategies is one way to improve  and motivate better eating habits and increased activity.

NICKOLAS

.

In this discussion post, I will be talking about learning theories and choosing one that I think would fit the best with the population that I am working with.  I will also be discussing how I would be applying that theory with the main health issue with my population.  Finally, I will be choosing two or three teaching strategies that I could employ to educated my population.

The learning theory that I believe would apply to my group the most would be the humanistic learning theory.  This theory, according to Purswell (2019) focuses on cognitive, interpersonal, and interpersonal growth, essentially what do they need to do to have a positive gain on my personal development.  As nurses, we would also be facilitating them to be self-directed towards their goals (Nies and McEwen, 2019).  This would also involve creating an environment that is optimal for learning.  I would try to set up a classroom focusing on an adult population of ages 45-60 who are obese and also have a noted history of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.  I would first talk to them and find out what their goals might be such as weight loss, increased activity, better control of their diabetes, etc.  We would be there to help guide them to their goals, support, and encourage them.  We would allow them to work towards their goals at their own pace, and educate them on the best way to do that.

Education is extremely important in trying to change the health of a group of people.  Trying to educated an entire group at the same time can have its challenges, as everyone learns differently and at a different speed.  Taking a humanistic approach, I think, allows them to go more at their own pace, set their own goals, and fosters a good learning environment for everyone.
