Encaustic Painting as a medium: This is probably the second or third oldest type of painting medium. Was developed by the Egyptians and Greeks.

The invention of Oil Painting
—this is a later invention (about 1426 or so by people in Belgium or the Netherlands). This is the Renaissance period—so it is not that long ago. Oil painting has many advantages over Tempera and really overtakes or ousts tempera painting until the 1950s, as I stated above.
