Individual Summary
. Having an understanding of both sides of the policy controversy is imperative in formulating relevant arguments when participating in a debate. In preparation for the debate,
individually
students will read the coverage of the debate topic and write a summary of at least three persuasive arguments developed by the “pro” side and three persuasive arguments developed by the “con” side supported by
at least three scholarly and/or reputable references
. The summary should also include the student’s assessment of the quality of the arguments, the student’s judgment of which side is most convincing, and any personal reactions to the larger debate.
The summary should be no longer than
three pages
in total. Use the APA format (heading for each section, one-inch margins, Times New Romans style and 12-point font are required)

Juveniles should not be charged as adults
Juveniles facing trial in adult courts has been an issue (Graber, 2019). Punishing minors
in an exact manner that we penalize adults contributes nothing to societal safety. Generally, as
children age, they become much less likely to recidivate; putting youngsters up for years extends
their imprisonment beyond the period required for rehabilitation. Numerous adolescents involved
in the judicial system have encountered abuse and trauma. Youth involved in the adults’ criminal
judicial systems are likely to encounter sexual assault, physical harm, and suicide. Jailing
children alongside grownups also deny them exposure to various critical facilities and services,
notably elementary and special schooling, and therapy and counselling, hampering their
prospects of healthy development. I am a strong supporter of juveniles not being prosecuted as
adults for the reasons stated below:
Juveniles must not be charged as grownups due to their immaturity, absence of discipline,
and inability to cope with the psychological and fiscal consequences (Work, 2017). If individuals
are not of legal age, they ought not to be prosecuted as such. Juveniles act in ways that they are
unaware of the implications. They must and will be prosecuted only as minors. If they are below
the threshold of eighteen, they should not be charged as grownups. They are too little to bear so
much weight.
Furthermore, if a child is convicted for a felony and is mandated to face trial as a
grownup, this may harm them both personally and everyone near them. By dealing
with something as severe and harsh as the adults’ court structure, the juvenile’s close ones may
suffer psychologically, the youngster may fear those around them as a result of harassment, or
the juvenile may have folks dislike them due to their acts. If you are convicted as an adult, the
3
conviction will available on your adult record, making it more challenging to get employment. If
a child is prosecuted as a grownup, they may lose conviction in declaring not guilty.
Additionally, prosecuting children as grownups do not deter them from perpetrating other
crimes after being released. They are safer off in a secure setting that provides structure and
opportunities for learning. Usually, incarcerating them does not help, undermining the primary
reason for prosecuting them as grownups. Why would they choose to expose themselves to
heightened danger in an adult institution if there is zero long-term advantage?
Reasons why juveniles should be tried as adults
Despite my opposition to juveniles being prosecuted as grownups, some circumstances
force them to confront this type of judgment. To begin, prosecuting teenagers as adults may deter
youngsters from attempting violent or other offences (Should Juveniles Be Tried as Adults,
2020). The judicial institutions are now obsolete and very indulgent, which may be an issue.
Today’s adolescents take advantage of outmoded justice structures and perpetrate crimes in the
knowledge that they will not face serious consequences. Once they execute a felony, even a little
one, they become offenders, and when juveniles understand that they will not face the
consequences, they will continue to commit offences.
Another benefit of trying minors as grownups is that retribution is applicable not just to
the offender but ultimately to the offenders’ family. The relatives of the perpetrators will be more
secure in understanding that the culprit who stole their beloved one’s life or caused them
suffering is in prison. They will be more secure realizing that the offender poses no danger to
them or anybody else. Moreover, minors must be prosecuted as adults. Once they are absolved of
an offence, they discover that they may execute other offences or the exact crime without facing
4
the consequences. They become habitual offenders and may ultimately commit more violent
felonies.
In summation, juvenile tribunals were established in the nineteenth century due to
humanity’s recognition that juveniles lacked the intellectual capacity that grownups possessed.
Juveniles deserve tools to prepare them for success upon parole from juvenile institutions rather
than facing the devastation associated with adult jail institutions. Juveniles must be handled as
such in the legal system, emphasizing rehabilitation rather than punishment. Thus, I advocate for
juveniles should not be punished as adults.

I hope you’re well!
I took a look at your paper and have a few
suggestions that will make this a strong paper.
1. In addition to providing three arguments for
why juveniles shouldn’t be tried as adults, you
should also include three arguments for why
juveniles should be tried as adults (you should
be able to get this information from your group
members who are arguing the other side).
2. You also want to include your thoughts on
each argument. Specifically, let me know
whether you think the argument is strong or
not and why you think that.
3. The last paragraph should be your opinion
based on your thoughts of the arguments
which ultimately lead to your personal/
professional stance on the issue.
4. Remember to cite anything that isn’t your
own opinion. Any facts or statistics you present
need a reference to support those claims.
I hope this helps and let me know if you have
any questions or if I can clarify anything!
