PERMISSION LETTER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
Permission must be sought and obtained from the appropriate person(s) prior to conducting any
research. When you seek approval for your study, make sure you are speaking to the person who
has final authority to make the decision regarding whether your proposed research is permissible.
For this assignment, you will compose a letter or email that may be sent to the site gatekeeper to
seek permission to conduct your proposed research.
INSTRUCTIONS
You will compose a letter or email written to the actual gatekeeper of the site where you plan to
conduct your research. Note that, for the purposes of this assignment, you must compose this
letter or email, but at this point in the program, you are not required to actually send it to the
gatekeeper. You may send it, but you are not required to do so. The purpose of this assignment is
to highlight the importance of seeking site approval from the appropriate gatekeeper early in the
process and to prepare you to send this letter when you feel confident about your research topic
and the site where you want to conduct your research. For more information, see chapter three in
the textbook.
The following guidelines must be met for this assignment:

Include the date.
Include the site location.
Address the appropriate gatekeeper(s).
Ask permission to conduct research at the site.
Disclose that the research is for partial fulfillment of the doctoral program at Liberty
University.
Disclose the purpose statement of the study.
Include the central research question.
Include the three forms of data you intend to collect.
Give them as estimated timeline for when you will begin and end collecting data.
Note that you need a letter from them granting permission to conduct the research (A

Dr. Keller,
I am writing to seek your permission to conduct applied research at Hampton High
School. This research is a requirement for partial fulfillment of my doctoral program at Liberty
University. The purpose of my research is to solve the problem of low scores on the Ohio
Educational Assessment (OEA) for Science. The central research question is, How can the
problem of low scores on the Ohio Educational Assessment for Science be solved at Hampton
High School in Ohio? Proposed data collection methods will include interviews with five
teachers, a survey of 15 teachers, and an analysis of the documents of the assessment scores on
the OEA for Science for the previous three years. I plan to collect data between September and
November of this year. Before I am able to conduct this research, I must have a permission letter
from the appropriate gatekeeper at the school. I respectfully request you provide me a letter
granting permission so I may conduct this research.
Sincerely,
Suzie Brawn
