IMPACT OF COVID19 ON THE TEACHING IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSITUTIONS IN CHINA: A RELOOK
AT THE DELIVERY SYSTEM
ABSTRACT
The impact of Covid19 on the education systems around the world was unprecedented. Many higher
tertiary education institutions from the United States, UK, Australia to Europe were also affected.
What of the impact of Covid19? It exposed the weaknesses of the delivery systems of all of these
countries even though as advanced and established as they were, were very weak in their online
delivery and support systems. But what of the developing and upcoming countries like China? It would
seem that China has coped well but it is a question to be answered especially in the teaching of handson subjects like music. This study seeks to understand the implications for many developing countries
as well as smaller universities on how to overcome challenges within such a challenging time. This
study would adopt a mix mode research design, combining quantitative and qualitive methods
methodology. A total of 50 respondents would be interviewed and 300 responders would be invited
to participate in survey.

Introduction
Covid19 has forced many countries to close their borders and also many sectors of the economy within
those borders from the education, food and beverage and entertainment to name a few. Whilst many
bigger and more established universities in developed countries were able to muster enough
resources to conduct their classes online, many smaller universities struggled to cope. In the United
States, universities such as the University of Southern California is already testing its online platform
to handle over 7,000 plus lectures. (Times Higher Education, n.d.)
At ground level even at school level, this crisis has exposed many weaknesses within the present
education systems from access to broadband, computers and internet network required to make
learning work. Also called into question is the conducive environment required to the misalignment
of resources and needs. (OCED.org, 2020) This leads towards a more challenging environment
especially as more colleges and universities move towards online and virtual courses. While the shift
has been impressive, the outcome on teaching and learning has been mixed. (DePietro, A., 2020)
However, with the sudden changes there are challenges to be overcome. Many students struggle with
online learning across the world. This gap is quite evident between developed and developing
countries. For example, 95% of students in Switzerland, Norway and Austria has computers, only 34%
in Indonesia do so. (Li, C. & Lalani, F., 2020)
Is online learning effective? There is evidence that students retain 25%-60% more material as
compared to 8%-10% as compared to a classroom due to the fact that students are able to learn faster
online. However, the effectiveness of learning online varies amongst different age groups. (Li, C. &
Lalani, F., 2020) This study aims to investigate if the move online could be the catalyst to create a more
effective delivery system in China.
Objectives
The objectives of this study are as follows:
1 . To examine the various methods of educating students that has since evolved in China during
Covid19
2. The influence of online technology (AI) and infrastructure (4G and soon to be rolled out 5G) in
playing a role in the delivery system
3. The factor of demographics (age, income, education and gender) and the role that it plays in this
research
4. Challenges identified in implementing the online delivery system
Research Method and Analysis
This research will use a mixed – method research design, combining qualitative and quantitative
methods. There would also be case studies research method to provide a more detailed examination.
The findings would be ascertained by the various data collection methods, samples and different types
of data analysis.
