For this week’s discussion, after reading Chapter 8 in
your text please make an initial post of at least 150
words discussing the Case Study on page 148. Using
Table 8.3 and the corresponding chart, please explain
whether or not the patient meets the criteria for
admission to the hospital.
You also have to respond to at least 2 other students
(100 words each).

A patient must meet two different criteria’s. One falls under the
severity of their illness, which is the overall symptoms of the
patient, and the other falls below intensity of service, the
current state or treatment the patient is currently receiving. The
patient given does meet criteria for admission to the hospital
mostly due to extreme changes in a short time
frame. Reasoning for this decision is because the 32-year-old
woman is suffering acute loss of ability to move a body part,
numbness and paresthesia of her right foot after walking for 20
yards or less, which is a requirement under the severity of
illness. She also was approved for surgery within a 24 hour
window of being admitted, which falls below the intensity of
service. The plan for her states she has not yet been admitted,
but once she is, she is to undergo operative intervention in
order to repair her femoral artery injury.

As table 8.3 provides the admission criteria for medical and surgical admissions,
the patient in the case study does meet the criteria. The admission criteria table
requires that a patient meets one of the criteria’s within the severity of illness
column and the intensity of service column. For severity of illness, the patient
would meet the criteria of loss of ability to move a body part. The patient
complained of such instance like numbness and paresthesia of her right foot, and on
the examination there was a palpable pulse felt on the same foot although here was
some motor and sensory function. This meant that there was not adequate blood
flow to the right lower limb. As for intensity of service, the patient had to undergo
major surgery which is stated in the plan as repair of the femoral artery injury
which is a major surgery and may lead to many other complications sometimes
even death arising during or after the surgery. This then meets the intensity
criterion of procedure within 24 hours of admissions she was planned for femoral
injury repair that same night. So, yes, the patient definitely meets a criteria from
each of the columns for admission to the hospital.
