Discussion: Psychiatric Mental Health Forum
Depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Despite the
prevalence of mental illness, negative attitudes and beliefs about people living with mental
illness contribute to significant barriers in seeking and accessing health care. Mental illness
stigma amongst health care providers is common, even in those who work in mental health
services such as inpatient psychiatry units or community mental health clinics.
Mental illness stigma is often present in the language we use to talk about people who
experience mental illness. Read the attached article by Jensen et al. (2013) entitled
“Championing Person-First Language: A Call to Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses” and the brief
description of person-first language from Mental Health America’s website (Links to an external
site.): http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/person-centered-language
1) Share an example from your work settings regarding your observations of person-first
language.
2) How does the use of person-first language (or lack thereof) influence the care we provide as
nurses?
3) Reflect on strategies you can adopt to promote the use of person-first language when
discussing people experiencing mental illness.
