Gender Dysphoria (DSM-5) is defined as clinically significant distress or impairment related

to a strong desire to be of another gender, which may include desire to change primary and/or

secondary sex characteristics. Not all transgender or gender diverse people experience dysphoria.

STEP 1: Find a popular news article published within the last five years that addresses the topic

of gender dysphoria. This should not be a blog entry, but a published article from a news source

such as Time Magazine, The New York Times, Newsweek, NPR, CNN, Fox News, etc. A great

place to look is the APA’s Psychology news portal:

http://www.apa.org/news/psycport/…An

excellent resource (which you should review and incorporate) is from the U.S. Department of

Health & Human Services – access HERE! (

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK532313/

) Another great resource of APA

regarding background, treatment, and terminology of gender dysphoria can be found HERE! (

https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/gender-dysphoria/what-is-gender-dysphoria

)

STEP 2: Consider this news article in light of the diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria.

Remember that popular usage of psychological terms often does not always align with the

clinical diagnosis. Consider the accuracy and thoroughness of the news article in comparison to

the diagnostic criteria. Also review the US DHHS resource.
