the time. The coworker is not a very good dresser and Ben could easily make fun of the way the

4) Celestina’s office mate is a heavy drinker. However, the office mate’s behavior does not

negotiations by focusing on minutia in order to wear him down. Chris knows all about this
Chinese tactic but is tempted to just be honest and tell them he knows what they are doing and

6) Chuck listens to music on his computer with headphones on. However, Chuck often ends up
going to sleep and snoring which irritates his coworkers. How should Chuck’s coworkers handle

7) Daniel is the new boss in a factory in Suzhou, China. Daniel hired a nephew of a party official
to smooth over negotiations with the local government. The nephew is a disaster and has cost
the company money. Zhou is his number two man in the government and suggests the nephew
be transferred to an inactive post were the nephew will not cause problems. This is totally
against company policy. Daniel is pretty sure his bosses back in the US would not understand
the details of “guanxi” politics in China. On the other hand, Daniel’s US bosses are far away and
also want results in China. Chris could transfer the nephew to a post that is not inactive but
where damage to the company is minimized. What should Daniel do?
8) David has to do a presentation at work. There is one member that always makes sarcastic off
topic comments after his presentations that the other employees always laugh at. David feels
the comments are meant to undermine his authority. The sarcastic coworker has lower rank
than David but is not a subordinate and in another department altogether. What should David
do?
9) Elisa has a coworker, Sally, who likes to talk about politics. Elisa does not care that much
about politics all that much but finds her co-workers political views to be little extreme. Elisa
likes her coworker and wants to get along with her. Elisa has thought of just pretending to agree
with Sally or telling Sally she would rather talk about other subjects. Elisa suspects that Sally will
be insulted if she goes with the second option. What should Elisa do?
10) Elsa and Juanita have just finished doing a house call for the company. Elsa wants to stop
for a drink before going back to the company. Juanita tells Elsa this is time theft and drinking on
the job is a serious infraction of company rules. Elsa drives to the bar anyway since the car
belongs to Elsa. Elsa has walked into the bar. Juanita is sitting in the car trying to figure out her
next move. What should Juanita do?
11). David is a recent hire. He is happy for his new job. He gets assigned to a cubicle next to a
coworker. In time he starts noticing a cross. At first he thinks oh he must be Christian like me.
Then upon a closer look he notices that it is an upside down cross. Offended and now feeling

For this assignment you focus on understanding Cross Cultural behavior, that is, you will work
with individuals who were born in a different country and don’t speak English as their first
language. Their habits and customs that you examine should be different from you own. You
may have a hard time understanding their behavior and even find it odd and that is ok. So listen
up my to what you to present in an explanatory research paper.
Now let’s investigate what I need from you. Again, this assignment is there to help you increase
your ability to work with people from different cultures in the following ways:
1. What you should Become aware of, is your own level of openness to and confidence in
cross-cultural experiences. What you need to do is Work on expanding your comfort zone and
explain and contrast your culture with theirs. Give details that would be intricate in experience of
both parties. Use United States Of America Title 7 categories (how does age factor in
interpersonal communication for example, Sex, Orientation etc) in your paper to fill this area.
2. What you should Assume is differences until similarity is proven. To avoid embarrassing
misinterpretations, assume that individuals from different cultures will interpret communication or
behaviors differently until some similarities are proven. What you need to do is Explain different
behavior characteristics, values, and how they approach interact with the world both
interpersonally, verbally, and non-verbally.
3. What you need to do is Emphasize description rather than interpretation or evaluation.
Description emphasizes observation. What you should analyze is that Some customs may be
different from what you’re used to, but different doesn’t make them wrong or inferior. What you
need to do explain those customs differences and what did you learn.
4. What you should Show is empathy. Interpret the words, motives, and actions of a person from
another culture from the perspective of that culture rather than your own. What you need to do
is explain culture, ethnicity and nationality and how words, motives and actions from that person
is displayed compared to your own. This area will tie into number 3 above.
5. What you need to do in this section is present a hypothesis of how you think the other party
will respond based on internet research and cross culture analysis. Treat your initial
interpretations as a working hypothesis to match reality of interview. Pay careful attention to
feedback in order to avoid serious miscommunications and resulting problems. What you should
do is be courteous.;
6. Conclude your paper, now word count, but I do want detail, specificity, not general statements
and add 3 references. APA format, Cover page, Abstract, No word limit. Due by Sunday 23 of
