Introduction

In the book, The AACN Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing,

(AACN, 2008), nine essentials are stated to show the results that are anticipated of the graduated

baccalaureate nursing programs. These essentials specify an educational outline for the

groundwork of professional nurses. Essential one is liberal education for baccalaureate generalist

nursing practice. A concrete understanding of liberal education offers a foundation for the

preparation and training of nurses. Essential two is basic organizational and systems leadership

for quality care patient safety. The familiarity and abilities in leadership, quality enhancement,

and safety considerations for clients are essential to delivering great characteristic health care.

Essential three is the scholarship for evidence-based practice. This specialized nursing practice is

based on the application and rendition of present current data into one’s practice. Essential four is

the information management and application of patient care technology. The comprehension and

abilities in data organization and patient care knowledge are important in the distribution of the

quality of patient care. Essential five is health care policy, finance, and regulatory environments.

Health care policies, financial and regulatory, impact the type and standards of the healthcare

system and allows for significant reflections in nursing practice. Essential six is interprofessional

communication and collaboration in improving patient health outcomes. Interactions and

teamwork among other health professionals are dire in the delivery of not only extraordinary but

also safe patient care. Essential seven is clinical prevention and population health. A wellness

campaign and information on disease deterrence at both individual and population levels are

important to mend the health of all populations and in nursing practices. Essential eight is

professionalism and professional values. Efficiency and characteristic principles such as

selflessness, self-sufficiency, self-respect, honesty, and fairness are all foundations in nursing

practice. Essential nine is baccalaureate generalist nursing practice. A baccalaureate graduate

nurse can care for all societies of people of all ages in all healthcare settings. In turn, the graduate

nurse comprehends and values of care with all intricacies and uses all means in the care for

clients.

Background

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing created The AACN Essentials of

Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (AACN, 2008). The AACN

Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice establishes the

structure for formulating and evaluating educational programs for proficient nursing practice.

The publication of this Essentials book is due to a harmony-making method that involves nursing

educators, clinicians, executives, and researchers along with many nursing organizations.
