Essay 3: ?Overcoming Anxiety?
Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or uneasiness, about a forthcoming incident
with an unclear consequence. These uncertainties can affect sleep, appetite, and ability to
concentrate (Buck 22). ?For selected individuals, anxiety can become extreme and have
difficulty managing it and may adversely affect their daily routine? (Buck 30) (Thesis

Anxiety is the most common mental illness, and it can be a frustrating symptom
and difficult to manage, but there are several solutions to cope with anxiety.
Engaging in stress reducing activities is an excellent way to moderate anxiety. For
example, exercising helps alleviate anxiety by maintaining good health, it channels into having a
sounder mind[Anx16]. Several ways a person could exercise is by jogging, bicycling, or going to
a gym. ?While taking care of the body is important there are other ways to moderate anxiety like
listening to music?[Anx16]. Musical genres like classical and smooth jazz can sooth and
minimize stress tapping into an individual?s emotions and establish a peaceful ambience. Writing
is also an outlet for anxiety by being able to express feelings and emotions can provide a sense of
relief. Engaging in leisure activities and staying active are useful tools in succeeding to regulate
anxiety.
Often there might not be an activity immediately available to participate in, so when this
arises there are self-managing and relaxation techniques to redirect heightened anxiety. Some
relaxation techniques could be simply counting to 10 or repeat and count to 20 if necessary, or

even taking deep breaths by inhaling and exhaling slowly resulting in reducing a person?s heart
rate.[Anx16] If those relaxation techniques are not effective, try self-management?challenging
negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. For example, a student could be trying
out for their high school varsity sports team and it is a few that are selected, which in turn might
cause them to get anxious. The student could try recollect their thoughts by repeating to
themselves to try their best and be proud of the effort they put forward.[Anx16] If they are
unsuccessful in making the team the student can remind themselves is not something to get upset
over, remember to keep practicing and tryout for next semester. By pausing to relax or reevaluate
a situation it can change any outcome turning a negative into a positive therefore relieving
anxiety.
There are instances when a person?s unhealthy habits in their daily routine can heighten
their anxiety and altering that routine can significantly improve how some individuals with
anxiety function in their everyday lives. A poor diet can contribute to anxiety so eating well-
balanced meals, making sure not to skip any meals, and keeping healthful, energy-boosting
snacks on hand can help the issue[Anx16]. Also, ?getting enough sleep is another thing in a
person?s routine that could be affected?[Anx16]. Sleep deprivation which is lack of sleep linked
to making diagnosis like depression and anxiety symptoms worse so getting rest is crucial. In
hindsight, people can do detrimental things to themselves in their everyday lives that goes
unnoticed, in relation to anxiety when an individual with anxiety pays attention to these habits it
can help them act to improve their daily routine and moderate symptoms.
Every so often a person with anxiety could feel like nobody understands them and what
they are going through feeling alone, or even find it extremely difficult to deal with anxiety by
